General Statement of Duties

The Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) Community Development Fellow supports the work of the Co-Conveners, Advisory Circle, and campus leaders in connecting the new curricular components of the the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation NAIS grant, “Gathering at the Crossroads” to the people and structures necessary for the curriculum to be successful. This position will work in partnership with the NAIS Curriculum Development Fellow to support the goals of the grant.

This project aims to build a model of collaborative teaching and learning for Native American and Indigenous Studies centered in the Northeast region but with ties to a global indigenous network, by infusing Indigenous knowledge across disciplines. The project’s activities include curriculum development across the member campuses, faculty development, student development, and community engagement. This 3-year, grant-funded term position is focused on contributing to the work of the existing NAIS community in three types of "community development" -- developing community among (Native and non-Native) students who are interested in NAIS, developing the capacity of the Five College community (faculty, staff, administrators) to serve the needs of Native and Indigenous students and faculty, and developing relationships between the Five College campuses and the Native communities of the area.

Modeled on other successful joint appointments in the Five College Consortium, this position will build on existing relationships to further connect faculty, staff, and students across the Consortium, which supports the work of some 2000 faculty and 30,000 students across the member institutions. It will be administratively housed at FCI under the Director of Development and Sponsored Programs and will have close engagement with the Five College Native American and Indigenous Studies Certificate Program. This position is intended to be an in-person, on-site role; we anticipate it beginning as a remote position due to pandemic-related restrictions on campus access.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the grant leadership team (Advisory Circle) and the Five College NAIS Committee to prepare materials to introduce students and advisors to the array of opportunities for NAIS coursework across the Consortium.
  • Beginning in year 1: Provide guidance and recommendations for training to campus advisors, faculty, and administrators on serving NA/I students, faculty, and staff. Help to develop, plan, and implement programming to increase campus’ capacity to serve these communities and cultivate a community of NAIS scholars.
  • Beginning in year 2: Develop relationships with NA/I communities in the region (working closely with existing structures and staff, particularly at UMass).
  • Participate in activities of the Native American and Indigenous Studies committee and project.
  • Evaluate and document the effectiveness, outcomes, and quality of programming and services being provided.
  • Work collaboratively to contribute to the planning and activities of the NAIS project as well as the faculty and student success staff on the campuses.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
  • Knowledge of issues of equity and diversity in educational settings, ideally including experience with Indigenous students and/or NAIS programs and methodologies
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide array of audiences and colleagues
  • Attentiveness to detail and organization
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively
  • Demonstrated judgment and discretion
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Capacity to comprehend written and verbal communication
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, by videoconference, and via email
  • Ability to pass a post-offer background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with Native and Indigenous communities
  • Demonstrated high level of cultural competency
  • Familiarity with the member campuses of the Five College Consortium
  • Familiarity with the Native and Indigenous communities of the Northeast region
