General Description of Class:

This is the first level of technologist under direct supervision to perform laboratory animal care according to the standards set by the University, the Canadian Council on Animal Care and the Ontario Animals for Research Act.

Typical Duties:

The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated. Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.

a) performs animal management and animal health checks; gathers appropriate samples for diagnostic purposes e.g. blood, urine, feces, swabs;

b) administers treatments as required under veterinary supervision, issues sick reports as required;

c) operates and works with specialized containment equipment such as biological safety cabinets, laminar flow racks, ventilated racks and autoclaves;

d) performs routine laboratory health surveillance e.g. pinworm check, fecal examination, blood sampling;

e) implements disease control requirements including treatment, signage, protective clothing as advised by veterinary or managerial staff;

f) wears personal protective equipment as appropriate;

g) may perform the duties of a Laboratory Animal Technician III and;

h) other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements for Selection:

Education: University degree in a related field and/or is a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician with the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science and/or completion of a recognized Veterinary Technology Diploma.

Experience: One year of related experience.

Other: Physically capable of performing the required duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs. No history of animal-related allergies. Must be willing to participate in the University Health and Safety Program, which includes the requirement to undergo an immunization program depending on the work environment. Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written). Ability to take direction and work independently. May be required to be in possession of a Provincial Class "G" Drivers license. Ability to work weekends and holidays as required.

Notes:

This is a casual position, up to six months. Days are to be assigned, including weekends and holidays, 8 to 24 hours per week.
