The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. As of Fall 2018, we currently enroll over 25,000 students in which 57% identify as Latinx, 7% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% as Black/African American, 21% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 8% as multiracial. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Under the general supervision of the Director Distance Education & Instructional Technology, the Instructional Designer (ID) provides training and consultative support to faculty teaching in higher education. The ID creates, teaches and contributes to faculty development learning experiences that models best practices of instructional design, pedagogy, curriculum development and quality online teaching; builds relationships across campus; researches and advises the OOI of best practices for technology-rich learning experiences; approaches; and performs other duties as assigned. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Consulting with faculty to identify, develop, implement, and evaluate areas in which technology can be applied to enhance teaching and learning;
- Assisting faculty to integrate technology into the classroom and converting traditional courses to online courses;
- Supporting the exploration, creation and conversation around instructional design issues, create customized digital instructional elements and related technology enabled components in various disciplines;
- Working with designated staff, faculty, and administrators to develop, modify, or implement training programs on web-based course development, technology-mediated instruction, and concepts of online course delivery to be delivered in face-to-face settings, with video, within course management systems, or online;
- Participating in the evaluation, selection, testing and implementation of hardware and software tools, technologies and services that empower faculty and enhance teaching/learning experiences and student services;
- Assisting faculty with understanding, developing, and meeting requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, along with its 2008 amendments for digital learning content and information and communication technology;
- Creating documentation on internal procedures, publish user documentation for supported digital resources and prepare reports;
- Assisting in the incorporation of multimedia instructional course content materials including images, video, audio and digital library materials using sound instructional design and pedagogical principles;
- Attending and/or presenting at appropriate virtual and face-to-face conferences and seminars to maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of new instructional software and pedagogical techniques;
- Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
- Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
- Working assignments in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus as needed; and
- Otherwise performing all other duties as assigned.
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; AND
The minimum qualifications for service as an instructional designer shall be either:
- A master’s in instructional design/technology or educational technology;
- A valid California Community College Credential;
- The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

- Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity;
- Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
- Willingness to examine and remediate one’s relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
- Experience working with a diverse student population;
- One (1) year experience in academic technologies and web development;
- Experience teaching in higher education with courseware, digital resources, and learning management system(s);
- Experience working in higher education
- Working knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning;
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of various Learning Management Systems (LMS ), graphic and multimedia software, web-design, and on-line course development;
- Working knowledge of district, college, and statewide policies and procedures, that influence online course development;
- Experience with developing, implementing, and communicating ideas effectively, while being open and responsive to new and diverse perspectives;
- Knowledge of Title 5, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, along with its 2008 amendments for digital learning content and information and communication technology;
- Working knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, groups, projects, etc., in higher education;
- Demonstrated experience in managing and developing courses using a variety of Learning Management Systems;
- Demonstrated success teaching with distance education in a higher education environment;
- Ability to work with and provide training in PC, Macintosh and mobile environments;
- Highly organized, strong communicator, and strong writing and editing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, college administration and representatives from other California Community Colleges and vendors, participate in shared governance and;
- Knowledge of the Vision for Success, Guided Pathways;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
- Related work and professional experience;
- Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
- Knowledge of the community college and district and its missions and goals.
Starting salary is $57,750 – $86,942 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,160 is available. Salary and stipend is prorated based on the duration of the assignment. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).Selection Procedure
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.
The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews.
A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
