Position Summary:

The School of Engineering + Technology at Western Carolina University (WCU) has an opening for an Assistant Professor of Engineering beginning in January or August 2021. This is a nine (9) month tenure-track position. The successful candidate must have a solid commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, scholarship, and professional service to the university and region. Many faculty pursue scholarship and applied research with external clients through our nationally-recognized Rapid Center. All engineering and engineering technology programs are accredited by ABET’s EAC and ETAC, respectively. The college has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a top 100 Undergraduate Engineering program.

Programs in the school have a strong emphasis on applied, Project-Based Learning (PBL) as evidenced by the industrial experiences of our faculty. Applicants with an extensive practical laboratory and industry experience will be reviewed favorably. Applicants must be able to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in one or more of the following areas:.

Product Design and Development
Engineering Project Management.
Thermal – Fluid Systems

The successful candidate will have a commitment to excellence in teaching and applied scholarship, based on the Boyer model of Scholarship. Successful applicants will have proven excellence, or potential, in teaching, scholarship, service, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Many opportunities for service exist both inside and outside the university. Applicants must be able to teach at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels including thesis supervision and laboratory instruction.

Candidates with extensive practical laboratory and experimentation backgrounds are highly desirable, and candidates with experience in more than one area of need will be reviewed favorably.

Western Carolina University (WCU) is located beside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway offering exceptional opportunities for outdoor recreational activities. For several years, WCU has been voted the Top Adventure College in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine for its location, and opportunities for mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, fly fishing, nature photography, and outdoor life.

The campus, in Cullowhee, North Carolina, is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Asheville, North Carolina, a location undergoing significant growth and manufacturing projects. The campus is located midway between Charlotte, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia. An instructional site for certain programs is located in Asheville, North Carolina.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least three years of relevant industry experience, or equivalent, are required.

A doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field, is required by the starting date.

This is a nine-month tenure-­track position at the rank of Assistant Professor level. Responsibilities include teaching, scholarship, advising, curriculum development, engagement with regional business and industry, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
