Job Summary

The Associate Director provides leadership and management functions for the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) clinical service delivery. Provides clinical consultation to the CAPS staff and faculty, and to the campus community around mental health emergencies. Oversees collection and analysis of data related to clients and clinical services. Participates as a member of the CAPS Management Team and may serve as the acting Director in their absence. Provides administrative supervision for educational counseling program and temporary clinical counselors. Coordinates clinical services for students with other campus units as well as community mental health providers. May participate as a core member of the Behavioral Intervention Team. Provides psychotherapy, outreach, workshops, consultation, supervision and crisis response. This position assists with the development of policies and procedures in adherence to federal, state, and system guidelines. Provides training and updates to the professional staff regarding assigned program responsibilities.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages and creates schedules (e.g., triage assessments and intake appointments).
  • Meets regularly with counselors to review client load and discuss case management.
  • Management of crisis response to campus emergencies, including coordination of clinical staff involvement in responding to crisis situations (may include incident debriefings, assessment, psychiatric hospitalization, consultation with community members, and follow-up)
  • Serves as clinical consultant to CAPS staff and the campus community, especially on issues related to standards of clinical practice and resolution of ethical concerns/dilemmas.
  • Chairs any clinical services committee and in consultation with the director, provides leadership in the development and implementation of clinical service policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Reviews student feedback on services as well as re-assigns clients when there is a request to change provider.
  • Coordinates and oversees the department quality assurance reviews of client records.
  • Conducts research and evaluation in order to provide an annual comprehensive CAPS review and summary.
  • Collaborates with the director in the development of campus mental health policies and procedures for SJSU students and the University community.
  • Provides clinical supervision for temporary unlicensed and licensed counselors and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Triage and crisis interventions, intake appointments urgent care, individual and group therapy.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Knowledge of and experience with clinical and personnel applications of various aspects of diversity (e.g., sexual orientation, transgender, religious practices, disabilities and racial and ethnic diversity).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills.
  • Ability to lead, supervise, and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Extensive related administrative and supervisory experience, including training and motivating staff.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with ability to effectively manage change and resolve complex problems independently.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, flexibility, good judgment and discretion
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of administration and management protocol, conflict resolution strategies
  • Ability to appropriately develop and conduct staff training and presentations.
  • Knowledge of psychological counseling in a clinical academic setting.
  • Knowledge of crisis management and intervention.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate Degree in Counseling or Psychological services field
  • Administrative experience in counseling and psychological services development/planning and recruiting in a higher education setting
  • Three years of progressive responsible experience in a counseling and psychological services field
  • Experience providing individual and crisis counseling to college age constituents
  • Experience in counseling and psychological services, clinical supervision, clinical training programs, or other counseling related roles with administrative, budget and personnel leadership responsibilities
  • Experience in leading and developing cohesive teams, managing performance and productivity, strategic planning, and contributing to organizational leadership.
  • Experience collaborating with campus units to advocate for students’ mental health and educational needs
  • Experience with maintaining technology applications within a counseling setting, including, but not limited to web-based products and services
  • Experience in project management including the ability to motivate and manage teams and to design, implement and evaluate large-scale programs and marketing campaigns

Preferred Qualifications

  • Appropriate (or ability to obtain) California License to practice in a clinical setting.
  • Experience in counseling and or psychological services in a clinical, academic setting.
  • Experience in taking on additional responsibilities of a counseling and psychological services unit at a college or university.
  • Experience with counseling and psychological services related technology and systems.
  • Experience in collaborating with a wide customer base around counseling and psychological services issues/topics.
  • Experience working in/with diverse populations
  • Experience with Silicon Valley, national and global counseling communities

Compensation

Classification: Administrator III
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
