Job Summary: Under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee, The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the Ph.D. or other doctoral degree.

Additional Department Summary: The Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Alabama seeks applications a for Post-doctoral position in the Advanced Manufacturing area. Individuals holding these positions are to conduct and lead research on various topics across advanced manufacturing systems including sensors, actuators, and control systems; automated and robot‐based manufacturing; human‐robot partnerships and collaboration; augmented and virtual reality enhanced manufacturing; and the future of data‐driven process including data mining, analytics, security, digital manufacturing, and predictive maintenance.

Successful candidates will hold terminal degrees and demonstrate a record of academic achievement in a research area or areas covered by the Mechanical Engineering Department. The department will establish a series of structured merit-based evaluations. Initial appointments are for one year, with renewal contingent upon demonstration of research productivity.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field is required.

Skills and Knowledge: This position requires experience with real-time control systems, data acquisition, and various sensors and actuators. The applicant must have knowledge of cyber-physical systems and/or IoT. Proficiency developing algorithms, system models, and simulations using MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape, Python and/or LabView is also required. Experience is desired in Industry 4.0, the industrial internet of things, and/or optimization of manufacturing systems and experience analyzing, designing, and implementing AI and machine learning.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated work in industrial robotics, collaborative robotics, physical human-robot interaction, applied VR/AR/MR, and/or teleoperated systems; knowledge of and experience working with autonomous and/or semi-autonomous robotics; strong history of publication in conferences and journal
