Overview

The Shvartsman Laboratory in the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics seeks applicants for a Research Specialist II. Our research focuses on the quantitative analysis of development. Our goal is to establish models that connect multiple levels of description, from gene sequence to pattern formation and morphogenesis. We emphasize close coupling between genetic experiments, computations, and theory, and use the fruit fly (Drosophila) as an experimental system for model validation.

The Research Specialist will manage the lab, provide general research support to the lab and work with the PI and other lab members to design and execute experiments. Lab management responsibilities will include organizing the lab, increasing lab efficiency, ordering/inventory, maintaining equipment, and training new lab members. The Research Specialist will also perform basic molecular biology procedures and other tasks in support of the lab.

Salary will include the full benefits package. The position is open and review of applications will begin immediately.

This will be a one-year term position, with the possibility of renewal given satisfactory job performance and continued funding.



Responsibilities

Specific duties include:

  • Maintaining the lab infrastructure, organization, and management, including:
    • Ordering/restocking inventory
    • Basic maintenance of lab equipment
    • Organizing/coordinating lab administration, e.g. organizing lab cleanups, group meetings, etc
    • Training new lab members on proper lab protocols and procedures
    • Sample preparation for experiments, preparing buffers, maintenance of Drosophila stocks.
  • Participation in experimental design, execution and analysis of experiments.
  • Presenting data in lab meetings, external meetings, and assisting with the preparation of publications.


Qualifications

Essential requirements/skills:

  • A master’s degree in biology or related field.
  • Laboratory research experience and familiarity with microscopy, basic molecular biology and biochemical procedures, and data analysis.
  • Ability to plan and manage a research project.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and optimize protocols, and manage projects.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a larger team.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Preferred knowledge/skills:

  • Experience in working with Drosophila.
