General Summary

The School of Communication, Media and Theatre Arts is accepting applications for a full-time lecturer position.

The ideal candidate will teach two to three journalism courses a semester, including the introductory theory course and the basic reporting and writing course. In addition, this candidate oversees the operation of the Eastern Echo, a 140-year-old, independent, and award-winning newspaper produced by EMU students. Under the advisory of the student media board and the College of Arts of Science, the candidate is responsible for advising the editorial and business operations of the paper to ensure content quality and financial sustainability.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The duties include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee operations such as working within an annual budget for payroll and other expenses.
  • Facilitate the hiring of editors, writers, and other leaders of the paper.
  • Develop and deliver training opportunities and organize orientations, workshops, and seminars every semester to improve students’ professionalism and writing.
  • Provide timely advice and resources to facilitate news coverage.
  • Provide timely feedback on students’ reporting and writing.
  • Facilitate internal and external communication between the Echo and various partners on and off campus (e.g., advertising clients, technical support of the website, administrations ad engine operator) to ensure smooth operation.
  • Work with journalism program faculty to oversee and facilitate internship programs at the Echo.
  • Develop CTAA credit opportunities for students engaged in writing/editing for the Eastern Echo.
  • Recognize students’ excellence such as awarding scholarships, participating in the Michigan Press Association college newspapers annual contests, and helping students attend the MPA annual conference.
  • Facilitate the liaison between the Echo and its alumni group on social media and through other activities.
  • Actively identify and expand advertising opportunities. Build an advertising team, recruit sales managers and representatives, and facilitate the training and operation of the staff.
  • Attend meetings with various departments and personnel regarding the Echo.
  • Other Echo-related activities that are not listed above.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate has a master’s degree in a related field, such as journalism, digital media, and media studies OR has a significant amount of professional experience (5+years) through working in a newsroom as a reporter or editor.

Teaching experience at the college level or equivalent is preferred.
