The Department of Pediatrics, Section of Cardiology has an opening for a full-time (unclassified) Professional Research Assistant position.

Nature of Work:

A full-time Professional Research Assistant (PRA) position is available in the area of pediatric heart failure research. The PRA will have a key role in conducting a variety of experiments exploring the molecular changes present in children with cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease. Laboratory techniques include, but are not limited to, RNA and protein extraction, cDNA synthesis, RT-qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA assays, maintaining primary cell culture, and peripheral blood mononuclear cell isolation. Various models of heart failure have been developed, including primary cardiomyocyte cell culture as well as rodent models. Experiments are also performed utilizing human samples (Institutional Review Board approved Pediatric Cardiac Tissue and Blood Bank).

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Human induced pluripotent stem cell cardiomyocyte (hiPSC-CM) differentiation and maturation
  • Transfection and CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing of hiPSC-CM
  • RNA, DNA, and protein extraction from cardiac tissue and cardiomyocyte cell culture
  • Peripheral blood mononuclear cell isolation and serum processing from human whole blood samples
  • Cardiac protein quantification through Western blotting
  • RT-qPCR in a 384-well format
  • ELISA assays
  • Reagent preparation
  • Organization and cataloging of human samples (in RedCap), antibodies, and chemicals
  • Laboratory supply ordering and invoice tracking

    QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

    • A baccalaureate degree in an appropriate scientific field (biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, genetics or similar)
    • Two years of full-time molecular biology laboratory bench research experience
    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Conditions of Employment:

    • Must successfully pass a drug test through Children’s Hospital Colorado
    • Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check
    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Hands-on experience handling pediatric cardiac tissue and processing pediatric blood samples
    • Training in molecular techniques with a good theoretical understanding and experience in interpretation of results
    • Cell culture techniques, including maintaining primary cell cultures
    • Laboratory management skills

    • Ability to work in the laboratory on weekends, as dictated by experiment schedule
