Biostatistician Research Associate

The Department of Family Medicine and the Adult and Child Consortium for Health Outcomes Research and Delivery Science (ACCORDS) at the University of Colorado seeks a faculty member with health-related research experience and expertise in biostatistics. Candidates at the level of Associate Professor are preferred. Specific areas of interest include expertise in pragmatic trials, stepped-wedge designs, longitudinal data, causal inference, cluster-randomized trials, and analysis of electronic health records.

This faculty position will have their academic affiliation in the Department of Family Medicine and will be a part of a well-established Biostatics core in ACCORDS, a research center supporting the advancement of health services research and T3-T4 translational research that is jointly funded by the School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado Research Institute. ACCORDS serves as the focal point for health care professionals, researchers and analysts from across the Anschutz Medical Campus to foster multidisciplinary collaborations that bring together our campus’ diverse skills and talents to pursue health services research and education. In addition, ACCORDS cultivates strong research and educational collaborations with external partners including the University Of Colorado School Of Public Health, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Denver Health, Kaiser Permanente Colorado, UCHealth, other health care delivery systems, community organizations, and state and local government agencies. ACCORDS has programs in Dissemination and Implementation Science, Patient-Centered Decision Making, Education, Data Science and Community Engagement and Outreach, as well as cores in Qualitative and Mixed Methods, Practice-Based Research Networks (PBRNs), Biostatistics for Health Services Research, and Mobile Health and Health Information Technology (HIT).

The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with over 70 ACCORDS affiliated faculty and other health services researchers from the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Public Health, Dental Medicine and the College of Nursing. The candidate will be funded to consult with faculty regarding applied research and will engage in collaborative research as well as develop and conduct original methodological research if they desire. They will support proposals to secure external funding, and contribute to our educational mission including teaching post-docs and faculty across the various ACCORDS sponsored fellowships and other educational programs across campus. Professional and research activities include the design and analysis of basic, application and translational research and clinical trials, statistical consulting, development of new statistical methods, disease information services, research databases and more.

The Department of Family Medicine is one of the premier primary care research departments in the US and internationally. Research programs in the Department include programs in Chronic Disease Prevention and Management, Community Engaged Research, Implementation Science, Integrated Behavioral Health, Practice Innovation, and Practice-Based Research Networks.

 

Examples of Work Performed:

Responsibilities for the faculty member may include but are not limited to (1) Participate in collaborative research, including grant and paper writing and developing analytic plans, including providing input to Masters’ level data analysts; (2) Teach and mentor Fellows and junior faculty in ACCORD programs; (3) Consult with faculty regarding methodologic questions and grant proposals; (4) serve as a co-investigator in the role of biostatistician on funded grant proposals.

 

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $90,000 to $105,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science, applied mathematics or related fields
  • Or equivalent PhD Degree that provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills and abilities
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of basic and advanced statistical principles and analytic methods relevant in medical research
  • Strong programming skills in a common statistical software package (such as SAS, R, S-Plus, Python, MATLAB and/or SPSS)
  • Good organizational skills across individual projects, managing own work load
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Positive attitude and the ability to work with biomedical investigators and colleagues at ACCORDS and more broadly with other units on the Anschutz Medical Campus
  • Ability to contribute to the growth and development of ACCORDS
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Strong knowledge of statistical computing and/or Bayesian inference
Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of research experience leading statistical analysis on funded research studies
  • Expertise in `big data’ analysis with primary areas of interest including electronic health records, pragmatic trial design including cluster-randomized trials, advanced techniques to approach causal inference and confounding in observational studies, and structural equation modeling
  • Evidence of collaborative research through publications in health services journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead the biostatistics elements of clinical or translational research projects.
  • Experience supervising master’s level analysts.
