Professional Research Assistant

Our laboratory is interested in understanding how synaptic cell adhesion molecules function to shape cell-type and synapse specific properties, and how their dysfunction within disease-relevant neural circuits contributes to the etiologies that underlie neuropsychiatric disorders. We employ a wide range of approaches that consist of molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, functional imaging, conditional gene targeting, antero- and retro-grade viral circuit tracing, optogenetics and electrophysiology (in primary culture and in acute slice) to interrogate the synapse and cell-type specific functional properties of cell-adhesion molecules.

Examples of Work Performed

Experimental Duties:

Preparation of primary neuron culture

in vivo stereotaxic injections to: (manipulation gene expression with spatial resolution or functionally trace neural circuitry)

Maintenance of mouse colony

Basic molecular biology (work with recombinant DNA, cell transfections/transformations)

Conduct experiments as related to the research project

 

Administrative Duties:

Oversee and help maintain laboratory protocols

Place and track laboratory orders

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

We seek a bright, organized, energetic and motivated individual who is interested in exploring the very exciting science behind synaptic transmission.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

The applicant should be open and eager to learn new experimental techniques.

Ability to work as a member in a cohesive group.

QualificationsMinimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, neuroscience or related field.

Previous laboratory experience.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with tissue culture, molecular biology and/or stereotaxic injections would be preferred.
