Assistant Professor

Nature of Work
This is a tenure-eligible Assistant Professor position in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology. The primary duties are to develop a strong, externally-funded research program and teach medical and graduate students. Candidates should have well-developed research plans that employ innovative approaches, human systems, and animal models to study pathogenic mechanisms, innate immune responses, and inflammatory processes during infection with emerging or re-emerging viruses. 
 
Supervision Received 
The individual holding this position will report to the Chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology.

Supervision Provided 
The person holding this position will develop and direct an independent, externally funded research program that employs innovative approaches, human systems, and animal models to study pathogenic mechanisms, innate immune responses, and inflammatory processes during infection with emerging or re-emerging viruses. This individual will be responsible for the daily management, supervision, training and evaluation of personnel (such as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and professional research assistants) whose positions are funded by research grants on which s/he is the principal investigator or co-investigator.

Duties and Responsibilities 
The duties of the individual holding this position will be threefold. First, the individual is expected to develop a productive, externally-funded research program. Second, the individual will carry out teaching of medical and graduate students as assigned by the department chair and performed under the supervision of designated directors for individual courses. Third, the individual is expected to participate in service activities within the department, the university, and the broader scientific community that contribute to the accomplishment of department and university missions and that promote the success and welfare of the broader scientific community.
The responsibilities include keeping abreast of current literature, formulating short- and long-term research goals, designing and performing appropriate experiments to achieve those goals, maintaining compliance with all institutional, state, and federal biomedical research guidelines, rules, and regulations, evaluating laboratory data and protocols, preparing and submitting manuscripts based on research conducted within the laboratory, and preparing and submitting grant applications to appropriate federal or private agencies to secure funding for the research program. It is important for the individual to interact effectively with other members of departmental faculty and the scientific community and to establish fruitful research collaborations. The individual is expected to present research in all appropriate venues to increase the awareness of the research being performed in the laboratory and to facilitate collaborations and interactions. These duties represent the primary responsibilities of the faculty member.

Working ConditionsSome flexibility in working schedule may be necessary for this position, but no ‘on-call’ or shift work is required. Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $79,000 to $106,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications This position requires a PhD, MD or comparable doctoral degree in the biomedical sciences with at least three years of post-doctoral experience within the fields of Virology and Immunology.  Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThe applicant must have excellent interpersonal skills, innovative, cutting-edge research plans, experience in supervising or training of research personnel, and be highly self-motivated.  *Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
