Position Summary

Portland Community College is accepting applications for a one-year temporary Technical Writer position.

The technical writer is a key member of PCC’s Office of COVID-19 Reopening. This team interacts with others at all levels of the organization and enjoys constant variety and challenge. We're looking for an accomplished communicator who is confident and prepared to model best practices in design and organization of content. The Technical Writer works with subject matter experts to develop documentation, administrative procedures, and health and safety protocols, gathers and analyzes technical information, creates decision trees, process flows, reports and charts for decision making, and maintains the library of these materials.

    At least one year of experience in an educational institution doing business process mapping, flow charting, and technical documentationDemonstrated ability to create written materials that are free of grammar and formatting errorsExperience using G-Suite for EducationThree or more years of experience doing technical writing in medical, public health, safety, emergency operations, crisis response, compliance or a related field

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

  • Associate’s degree in computer information systems, management information systems, business administration, communication studies, or related field (Note: Experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis)
  • Three years of technical writing experience which includes document review, and creating document templates and style guides

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to applicants with advanced degree in business communication or technical writing or Certified Professional Technical Communicator certification through the Society for Technical Communication.

Important Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and procedures of technical program documentation;
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and core Google apps
  • Capabilities of information technology systems including but not limited to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle, etc.
  • Operation and application of a wide variety of desktop publishing and multimedia software and development tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Dreamweaver, Power Point, HTML, RwD Infopak, Visio, etc.
  • Business procedures and methods;
  • Business process mapping and flow charting;
  • Report, user manual, and technical documentation formats;
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • Principles of organization and management of records.

Skill in:

  • Expressing difficult and complex technical concepts clearly and concisely both orally and in writing;
  • Utilizing computer technology for communication, data gathering, and documentation;
  • Analyzing, interpreting, and simplifying technical information.

Able to:

  • Create written materials that are free of grammar and formatting errors;
  • Meet specified deadlines;
  • Proofread own copy;
  • Review the work of others;
  • Learn and apply college and district policies and procedures;
  • Work collaboratively with diverse academic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff;
  • Work independently and as part of a team;
  • Learn the characteristics of new systems and update skills to adapt to changing technology.
Position Grade23Starting Salary ExpectationsThe first two steps of the range are: $55,148 to $56,803 per year. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.Position Grade Salary Range$55148 to $88495 Annual SalaryFTE1PCC BenefitsPCC offers a comprehensive benefit package designed to provide employees and their families, including domestic partners, with access to a broad range of benefit options. PCC currently fully funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age. Partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions (full-time employees only).

Paid Leave: (Pro-rated by FTE for Part-Time Employees)

  • Starts at 8 hours of vacation leave per month (additional vacation hours with years of service)
  • 8 hours of sick leave per month
  • 24 hours of additional personal leave days per year
  • 11 Paid holidays

Working Conditions and Physical RequirementsWork environment is in an office or computer lab setting and includes typical computer-related noise levels and paper or equipment generated dust.
