Ranked the top school of social work in Canada and the second world-wide, the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work (FIFSW) offers a professional Master of Social Work degree as well as doctoral education that produces strong researchers, educators, and leaders in the social work field. Through research, training, leadership, and service, its students and faculty address pressing social priorities ranging from aging, child welfare, HIV, mental health, health policy, trauma, structural inequality neighborhood and interpersonal violence, among others.

Reporting to the Dean, and working closely with the Associate Dean, Academic, and other senior staff, the Assistant Dean provides leadership and strategic direction for all major aspects relating to student services and will play a critical role in promoting an equitable, diverse and inclusive academic environment at FIFSW. More specifically, the Assistant Dean, working alongside Associate Dean, Academic, leads the strategic enrollment planning effort by reviewing the current academic plan as it relates to enrollment, financial aid and student programming groups.

The Assistant Dean also acts as a resource to the Dean, Associate Dean, Academic, and senior management, supporting the Faculty’s strategic and academic plans by providing senior-level advice and support on student experience and success which includes student enrollment, admissions, financial aid, scholarships, bursaries and awards, practicum experiences, academic calendar, academic appeals and petitions, scheduling, examinations, registrarial matters, and issues related to embracing an inclusive and equitable community. The Assistant Dean ensures that this plan of action is data-informed and identifies, evaluates, and modifies strategies and enrollment goals in light of internal and external forces that may influence the direction of the Faculty.

The Assistant Dean analyzes educational trends provincially, nationally, and internationally and offers recommendations to bring more diverse excellence to the student applicant pool. The Assistant Dean works closely with the Dean, and the Associate Dean, Academic to recommend strategies and programs to promote student satisfaction. (approx. 425 MSW students and 50 PhD students). The Assistant Dean oversees the development of the academic calendar, the delivery of front-line services to students, participates on various committees, and collaborates with faculty to ensure seamless, coordinated delivery of advice and academic counselling to students.

With a reporting dotted line to the Executive Director, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, the Assistant Dean is also responsible for leading the development and implementation of a student equity, diversity and inclusion plan, with a focus on student programming, access, learning and retention. This individual will provide leadership and direction in the development of a vision and an effective data-driven, results-based strategic programming plan that champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive environment at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. The Assistant Dean will work collaboratively with the EDI offices at the University to implement best practices related to equity, diversity and inclusion, with emphasis placed on reducing barriers to student access, attracting and retaining diverse student populations and closing existing achievement gaps leading to student success. In addition, this position will serve as the liaison to help students resolve disputes and issues with the Faculty.

EDUCATION

Master's degree required; doctoral degree preferred in social or behavioral sciences, higher education administration, educational research, or other closely related discipline.

EXPERIENCE:

Several years' progressive strategic experience related to the provision of superlative student and registrarial services. Strong understanding and knowledge of the higher education landscape and ability to translate this knowledge into solid student recruitment initiatives. Experience with academic support structures and an understanding of essential pedagogical principles. Direct experience developing, implementing, and continually evaluating registrarial and student services, financial aid, and academic advisory services; familiarity with the University of Toronto community, its policies and procedures; and management and/or supervisory experience in a unionized environment.

Professional experience in, and understanding of, complex issues related to equity and diversity as they relate to the student experience. A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people to build positive vision, direction, and results related to EDI strategic initiatives. Experience in building an equity, diversity and inclusion action plan. Ability to give presentations and educational sessions on equity, diversity and inclusion. Highly developed interpersonal skills, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information. A record of successfully driving organizational progress and change by influencing others without direct authority. A thorough understanding of diversity frameworks is essential. Demonstrated experience in bringing about positive change in the field of EDI. An understanding of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA and relevant legislation. Demonstrated experience in developing and evaluating EDI training modules and presentations

SKILLS:

Efficient and sophisticated data collection and analysis skills; superior communication and customer service skills; excellent reporting skills; high level of proficiency with student information system software; highly computer literate with sound working knowledge of PC platforms and Internet usage.

Ability to work independently and within a team environment. Ability to operate at the strategic, policy and operational levels. Highly developed organizational and program development skills. Demonstrated analytical ability and ability to use initiative and strong judgment in decision-making.
