Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at Unity Health Toronto. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2021 or as mutually agreed upon. This appointment is for a five-year term renewable upon successful review.

Through the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Healthcare Education Centre, which make up the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, research and education at St. Michael’s Hospital are recognized and make an impact around the world. St. Joseph’s Health Centre is a community teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto that serves the communities of West Toronto and beyond. St. Joseph’s in Toronto is committed to advancing the health of our community by being Canada’s best community teaching health centre. Providence Healthcare offers inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation to adults of all ages, as well as palliative care. An active community partner, Providence offers clinics to promote recovery and well-being, caregiver support, an adult day program for people with dementia, and long-term care for 288 residents.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine includes the divisions of Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, as well as a Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. The laboratory staff, including 25 physicians, 4 clinical PhDs and 4 research scientists, are responsible for the laboratory service, teaching and academic activities. The department’s strategic plan includes a focus on diagnostic innovation, test utilization and clinical engagement. The Laboratory Medicine department has an exceptional reputation in education and has strong areas of focus in collaborative and basic research, including coagulation, renal cancer and gastrointestinal disease as well as provincial and national contributions to the development of professional practices.

The Department seeks an outstanding academic individual with proven administrative experience and strong leadership skills who, as Chief, will continue to foster excellence in laboratory medicine and teaching while assuming the major role of leading the growth and development of research within the Department. The qualified applicant shall hold a Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent, and be eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario and should be eligible to warrant appointment to the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology of the University of Toronto, at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Minimum salary and benefits will be in accordance with the uniform minimal level of compensation for laboratory physicians in Ontario, currently $348,000 per annum.
