St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) in Toronto is currently recruiting a NEUROINTERVENTIONIST. We have a collegial Neurovascular (NV) team that is seeking a new physician member to support our mission of outstanding patient care delivered in a positive and constructive work environment. St. Michael’s Hospital is a member of the newly formed Unity Health Toronto Network and is a busy, 600-bed tertiary care center for Neurointervention, Neurosurgery and Neurology (Stroke) and one of four principal teaching hospitals of the University of Toronto. Clinical instruction of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate trainees occurs on a daily basis. Our Neurovascular Program is a multidisciplinary service with staff from Interventional Neuroradiology (INR), Neurosurgery, Neurology (Stroke), and Neurocritical Care.

We are a high volume referral center for the endovascular management of complex neurovascular conditions and perform the full gamut of NV procedures. We perform large volumes of endovascular aneurysm repairs and carotid artery stenting procedures annually. We are a designated Comprehensive Stroke Center and a designated Trauma hospital. We routinely treat acute large vessel ischemic stroke, dural arteriovenous fistulae, brain and spine arteriovenous malformations, epistaxis and perform pre-operative embolizations and percutaneous spine procedures.

The INR service has excellent access to anesthesia. Our clinical service is also supported by a very capable and dedicated Advanced Practice Nurse and highly efficient clerical staff. Currently, we utilize a dedicated Siemens biplane flat panel neuroradiology suite. Renovations are already under way for two brand new bi-plane Philips rooms. Non-invasive neurovascular imaging is supported by the vascular Doppler lab, our three multi-slice CT scanners, and four MRI machines (two 1.5T and two 3T).

Current research interests of the group include intracranial flow diverters, imaging and management of cerebral vasospasm, carotid artery stenting for asymptomatic patients (CREST 2) and technical maneuvers in acute stroke intervention. There is additional unique experience and opportunities for new device evaluations and development. The two new angio suites will have adjacent innovation and media areas. We also have research support staff that maintains NV databases. Furthermore, participation in ongoing clinical trials and animal research is underway.

Recently, significant new resources have been added in support of the Department’s internationally recognized research work in Medical Imaging Artificial Intelligence (AI) through a recently funded Research Chair in Medical Imaging Artificial Intelligence. The hospital houses the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute and the Keenan Research Centre with world-class research support and opportunities to engage in collaborative translational research.

An additional major initiative for the hospital is the creation and support of the BRAIN and HEART Center. This has a disease-based focus specializing in comprehensive, multi-disciplinary patient care concentrating on image-guided, minimally invasive therapy for Cerebro-and Cardio- Vascular Disease –a “one-stop” center that supports the patient experience from diagnosis to treatment to follow up. BRAIN and HEART is a physical transformation of our clinical spaces, fostering opportunities to work together and optimize use of technology and innovation.

The successful applicant will have completed specialty training in either Neurosurgery, Neurology or Diagnostic Radiology (Neuroradiology) with fellowship training in Interventional Neuroradiology/Endovascular Neurosurgery, and be eligible for licensure in Ontario. Preference will be given to mid-career candidates with a strong proven track record of clinical expertise and academic success. We are seeking a candidate at the level of Associate or Full Professor for appointment at the University of Toronto. The position includes a significant opportunity for advancement in clinical leadership and research, particularly as it relates to positioning the BRAIN and HEART Center for the future.
