Department of Bioengineering
Stanford Bioengineering is a dynamic and rapidly growing department within the School of Engineering and School of Medicine. The Department of Bioengineering is seeking a Life Science Research Professional to join our team exploring and developing a wide variety of tissue engineering technologies that could, one day, improve the lives of children living with congenital heart disease. Your work will focus primarily on identifying new methods and means for biofabricating and maturing blood vessels and vascularized tissues. Via our collaborators, these tissues will be used to gain new insights into the genetic and physiologic basis of vascular disease. Your work could also contribute to the field of vascular tissue engineering, generating patient specific vascular grafts. If you have strong experience in 2D and 3D mammalian cell culture, a proven track record of studying vascular systems under flow, an interest in regenerative medicine, and a desire to work independently and collaboratively with others, then join us in 3D printing the medical cures of the future!

Your responsibilities include:
  • Contribute to projects investigating the 3D bioprinting of 3D vascular tissues
  • Using experience in mammalian cell culture, assist in the derivation of vascular cell types for bioprinting purposes
  • Must keep an accurate laboratory notebook for all studies
  • Provide mentorship, where appropriate and possible, to graduate students and staff
  • Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with graduate, post-doctoral students and laboratory staff
  • Make recommendations on the research design and direction
  • May also be required to recommend changes in protocols to prevent reoccurrence of problems
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research
  • Contribute to the publication of findings. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, grants, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
  • Help orient and train new staff and/or students.
  • Flexibilty with other tasks as assigned.

    Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and four years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related scientific field and two years relevant expereicnel or PhD in related science field.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5-plus years experience in mammalian cell culture, regenerative medicine, and vascular perfusion systems. Experience in immunofluorescence, gene editing, qPCR, and confocal imaging is desirable. A demonstrated passion for 3D printing and tinkering is preferred, but not necessary.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and sterile BL-2 laboratory practices
  • Assist in interfacing with safety departments: occupational health, lab inspection, chemical inventory, controlled substances
  • Demonstrate aptitude in foresight, planning, and ability to organize as required by research
  • General understanding of scientific principles
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work

    Working Conditions:
  • May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens
  • Requires work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research
  • Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present
  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator
  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs
