Extension Program Assistant - Family Nutrition Program

Job Description:

The UF/IFAS Extension Family Nutrition Program (FNP) is a grant funded program by the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed). It helps limited-resource families in Florida access more nutritious food choices on a budget and adopt healthier eating and physical activity habits to reduce the risk of obesity and chronic disease. Extension Program Assistants with this grant in Broward County will teach general nutrition to groups of low-income families and youth and learn through on-the-job training skills and information related to teaching nutrition to low-income audiences.

The job description below is standard for the position, but in light of COVID-19, all FNP staff are currently working from home with modified job duties. In-person classes will only be taught in the case of significant safety measures being met and are reviewed on as needed basis.

  • Program Delivery: Program Assistants (PAs) participate in ongoing recruitment of SNAP-eligible audiences for nutrition education classes. PAs teach classes at various community and government sites. Sites include schools, parks and recreation departments, churches, health departments, and other locations. Classes often involve food demonstrations, and may involve physical activity. Some classes are one-time, but many are in-depth, requiring a minimum of six lessons for each group of participants. PAs collect demographic data on clients served, and administer surveys to evaluate knowledge gained and behavioral changes. PAs market the program through health fairs and other locations (booths, displays).
  • Planning: Plan and prepare nutrition education lessons.

  • Training: Develop and improve knowledge of food and nutrition subject matter, become proficient in determining client needs, understand various methods of reaching and teaching our audience, and develop proficiency in using the FNP teaching materials via participation in orientation training, continuous on-the job training, and self-study. Training is provided by supervisor on a regular basis.

  • Travel: Travel within assigned district to assigned teaching sites. Travel is by means of a personal vehicle, for which mileage will be reimbursed monthly at the current state rate. Occasional out-of-county travel will be required.

  • Reporting: Maintain accurate records and reports on clients and programming. Submit reports on time for Supervisor or other designee. Should be comfortable using Microsoft Office Software.

  • PAs will need to lift and carry teaching materials and supplies up to 40 lbs. Work may require standing, stooping, pushing and/or pulling. Job may require standing for prolonged periods of time both indoors and/or working outside to perform teaching lessons.

  • PAs will achieve and maintain food safety certification (ServSafe or SafeStaff).
  • Normal Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8-5. Once programming resumes, job may require frequent night and weekend hours due to the nature of the program.

Remote Work Requirements: Reliable home internet is required at this time, computer equipment will be provided after hire.
