EXTENSION PROGRAM ASTJob Description:
Participates in on-going recruitment of audience for nutrition education classes for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. Teaches nutrition education classes to low income participants at various community and government sites. Sites include schools, parks and recreation departments, churches, health departments, and other locations. Some classes are one-time, but most are in-depth, requiring a minimum of six sessions for each group of participants. Programming may be provided in-person or virtually through an online platform. Collects demographic data on clients served. Evaluates knowledge gained and behavioral changes through approved evaluation tools. Refers participants to government and local agencies for assistance, such as food stamps, commodities, etc. Markets the program through health fairs and other locations where a booth or display is appropriate. Works in coordination with appropriate agency staff to ensure the delivery of quality services to the EFNEP clients.

Teach evidence-based approved program curricula as designed. Use approved and appropriate teaching methodology (food demos, technology, games, etc.) Assess participants’ access to kitchen equipment. Engage participants in learner-centered activities. Demonstrate active listening and provide feedback. Apply current Dietary Guidelines for Americans relevant for the target audience. Apply current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans relevant for the target audience. Facilitate participants to apply new information and skills to set goals. Refer opportunities to influence the food environment to appropriate person (supervisor or professional educators). Recognize participants’ successes to help build confidence. Use supervisor feedback and/or evaluation results to improve teaching skills/techniques. Refer participants to other Extension programs, human service agencies and other community resources. Organize and maintain teaching materials, supplies, and equipment. Conduct indirect education/short-term (health fairs).

Plans and prepares nutrition education lessons. Continues to improve knowledge of subject matter and teaching methods.

Recruit partners and agencies using a variety of methods such as in-person meetings, phone calls, emails, and other. Establish expectations with agency partners. Use research-based, program-approved educational materials. Use required logos, program funding and/or messaging on print materials. Use civil rights posters. Schedule programs with input from supervisor, participants, and/or agency partners. Obtain needed materials (e.g., food, educational materials, equipment, reinforcements/enhancements and forms). Prepare activities and materials based on participants’ interests, age, language and abilities.
Build and Maintain Partnerships
Core competencies include: Identify and follow through with partnership opportunities as discussed with supervisor. Connect partners with other Extension programs. Understand and respect the missions of partnering agencies. Complete and follow partnership/nondiscrimination agreements. Communicate regularly with internal and external partners to coordinate services (phone calls, emails, face-to-face). Communicate partnership concerns and issues to supervisor in a timely manner. Respond to agency referrals in a timely manner and report follow-up with the person/agency that made the referral. Strengthen programming by involving volunteers/community collaborators.
Core competencies include: Collect evaluation surveys and other required forms (sign-in sheets, class attendance records, participant consent for photographs). Follow program approved methods (script) to collect participant information, outcomes and success stories. Maintain participant confidentiality in collection, transportation and storage of data. Review records for completeness and follow-up with participants if needed. Prepare, submit and/or enter data in a timely manner. Follow program guidelines for record and security storage. Meet expected goals for participation/caseload as designated by supervisor. Provide constructive feedback to supervisors/State leaders about program effectiveness.
Maintain Accurate Records and Reports
Core competencies include: Prepare and submit records and reports neatly, accurately, completely and on time (receipts, program attendance, program reports, program data, calendar/schedule). Document time and travel regularly and accurately.
Communicate Program Value
Core competencies include: Communicate the goals and mission of Extension and the program. Use evaluation results to promote programs. Share program outcomes and successes with stakeholders, media and the public.
Develops and improves knowledge of food and nutrition subject matter, becomes more proficient in determining client needs, understands various methods of reaching and teaching the clientele, and develops proficiency in using the EFNEP teaching materials via participation in orientation training, continuous on-the job training, and self-study. Continuous on-the job training is presented by the supervising faculty on a bi-weekly basis. Thorough training for virtual education will be provided.

Core competencies include: Operate common office equipment. Be open to learning and trying new technology. Use technology for effective communication and program support. Use approved websites for program support and implementation. Use audio visual equipment and materials appropriately in teaching. Use online evaluation tools and reports.

Core competencies include: Demonstrate effective time management skills to meet program expectations such as teaching, recruiting, recordkeeping, and reporting. Meet scheduled commitments; arrive prepared and at scheduled time; cancel appointments only when necessary. Use program resources wisely and ethically (travel, time, money, equipment, materials, reinforcement items, etc.). Communicate concerns and issues to supervisor in a timely manner (sickness, leave requests, change of schedules, work-related accidents/incidents, and conflicts with agents, participants, co-workers, other stakeholders, partners). Practice positive work ethics (loyalty, honesty, integrity, perseverance). Demonstrate compliance with health and safety policies and procedures for yourself and others at work. Dress according to program guidelines. Practice good hygiene. Model positive nutrition, health, and food safety behaviors. Comply with State laws regarding reporting criminal activity (copyright laws, reporting child abuse, and issues related to court cases). Participate in the research mission of the university as approved by supervisor.Be an active participant in staff development/training. Set goals to improve work performance in conjunction with supervisor. Work independently with confidence.

Stays within assigned travel allocation while traveling to assigned teaching sites from the official headquarters.
A high school diploma
Valid Driver's LicensePreferred Qualifications:
Able to plan and deliver nutrition education lessons. Knowledge of nutrition or previous teaching experience desirable. Able to follow directions and complete reports. Experience working with low income clients helpful. Ability to work both as a team and independently preferred. Willing to work evening hours as classes dictates. Willing to work on weekends occasionally. Excellent written and oral skills. Excellent computer skills preferred.
