Job Description:

Florida Sea Grant at the University of Florida is hiring a full-time Sustainable Fisheries Communications Manager (SFCM), who possesses extensive practical knowledge of saltwater angling, engaging with fishers, experience in and commitment towards sustainable angling practices, and excellent reasoning and communication skills. The goal of the SFCM position is to work and communicate directly with recreational anglers to help reduce catch-and-release fishing mortality from barotrauma by promoting the use of fish descender devices (FDDs), handling techniques and other tools and best practices for application by recreational anglers.

The SFCM will be responsible for planning, coordinating, delivering and evaluating a seven-year (2021-2027) Gulf of Mexico-wide (Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas) outreach and communications campaign to foster visibility, awareness, knowledge and adoption of sustainable saltwater angling techniques that involve the use of FDDs. The SFCM will also be integral to the development of marketing strategies and the use of traditional and web-media communication to support the program and interface with management agencies and program partners. The SFCM will develop and implement this programming in collaboration with Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant Programs and as a member of a broad team of scientists, outreach specialists, and marketing and communications consultants managed by the NOAA Restoration Center. The SFCM will be required to travel regionally (when deemed safe and appropriate) to coordinate activities with partners and to participate in on-site demonstrations, trainings, field trials, events and conferences.

This is a seven year program. As such, percentages of work-time devoted to essential functions may vary depending on program phases. A crucial skill will be experience in communicating and interfacing directly with fishers.

  1. Plan, coordinate and conduct an outreach campaign (through on-site demonstrations, trainings, presentations and displays) promoting sustainable fishing practices to reduce mortality of fish from barotrauma. This will include coordinating the distribution of FDDs, evaluating the effectiveness of outreach programming and reporting (45%).
  2. Plan and implement complementary communications and marketing strategies through the development of training curricula, print media, web-based communications and multi-media applications. This will involve leading the team’s communications committee, sharing other products developed in collaboration with a team of communications and education consultants. Outreach and communications programming will be conducted in partnership with the NOAA Restoration Center, project partners, and Gulf of Mexico Sea Grant Programs (45%).
  3. Build and maintain a constituency of program stakeholders and partners (5%).
  4. Other (5%).
