Queer Alliance Resource Center
Founded shortly after the 1969 Stonewall Riots, what is now formally known as the Queer Alliance Resource Center (QARC) is the oldest queer organization at UC Berkeley and the second oldest Registered Student Organization (RSO) at UC Berkeley. QARC strives to transform UC Berkeley into a safe and affirming space for the trans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer community. QARC empowers and enriches the experiences of LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff at UC Berkeley through advocacy, service, and engagement. QARC serves the LGBTQ+ undergraduate and graduate community through recruitment and retention work; QARC runs an LGBTQ+-centered resource center by offering basic needs and academic resources, hosts regular queer/trans centered programming, fosters leadership opportunities, and advocates for policies that build towards a more equitable and inclusive community at UC Berkeley. QARC centers LGBTQ+ students of color in their work.
The LEAD Center
The Leadership, Engagement, Advising and Development (LEAD) Center is a department of the ASUC Student Union and at the center of student life at UC Berkeley. It is the campus department primarily responsible for encouraging student involvement and facilitating leadership development opportunities. It serves a critical role in providing administrative, advising, and programmatic support to many student communities, including approximately 1,000 registered and sponsored student organizations, 69 recognized fraternities and sororities, undergraduate and graduate student government, the campus programming board, the Student Environmental Resource Center, Cal Debate, over 50 student publications, bridges Multicultural Resource Center, Recruitment and Retention Centers, and the largest student housing cooperative in the country.
The QARC Program Director is an experienced professional who advises a wide range of students and/or student organizations on the creation of co- curricular and leadership development experiences that complement the core mission of their organization and/or community. The person in this position serves in an administrative, advising and programmatic role to 32 cultural and identity-based sponsored student organizations that focus on professional development, recruitment and retention of LGBTQ+ students. More specifically the responsibilities of this position include supporting LGBTQ+ students in the development of various campus programs and activities, providing leadership development opportunities, helping students secure LGBTQ+ specific space on campus, advocating for student needs to campus departments, administration and community stakeholders, assisting in the completion and management of various campus policies and procedures, and providing guidance around access to campus resources.
The QARC Program Director also collaborates with students and other partners to identify student needs for programs and services. In addition, this position works collaboratively with the Student Organization Advising & Leadership Development Team as well as independently under general supervision. The QARC Program Director has the responsibility of researching, implementing, and coordinating new leadership initiatives that encompass the use of cutting- edge leadership and student development literature, theory and best practices. In an effort to create opportunities for campus collaboration, the LEAD Center QARC Program Director also has the responsibility of serving in a liaison capacity between the LEAD Center and campus advisors within other departments that sponsor or recognize registered student organizations.
- Specific knowledge of supporting LGBTQ+ students, particularly trans students and/or LGBTQ+ students of color
- Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Experience working with LGBTQ+ community members and/or LGBTQ+ youth leaders.
- Knowledge and experience in student leadership/student development theory and practice.
- Knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and managing appropriate outcomes.
- Experience drafting, incorporating, and assessing student learning outcomes.
- Ability to mediate conflict, problem-solve, and respond appropriately to student concerns.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively one-to- one, in small groups, and in public speaking contexts.
- Willing to work in partnership with student government leadership.
- Ability to effectively serve and understand issues of underrepresented students.
- Strong organizational and verbal/written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work both collaboratively and independently with students, staff, faculty, and the public.
- Ability to interact at all levels with campus and community constituents and stakeholders with a high level of political acumen.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and projects successfully in a fast paced, politically charged environment.
- Experience with First Amendment guidelines to student speech, including time, place, manner laws, and guidelines.
- Ability and willingness to explore alternatives to existing products and services and identify opportunities to improve procedures and practices
- Working knowledge of common computer application programs.
- Strong knowledge of common computer application programs and knowledge of higher ed and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
- Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- At least 1-2 years of professional experience working with college students, preferably in student organization advising and/or leadership development
