Assistant Research Engineer - Applied Data Science - Department of Nuclear Engineering

Assistant Research Engineer - Applied Data Science - Nuclear Engineering Department

The Complexity Group in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley welcomes applications for an Assistant Research Engineer to perform independent research in low resolution multi-sensing and data science for nuclear applications.

Appointment length:
This is a twelve month, 100% time appointment with the possibility of extension being subject to performance and budgetary approval. Anticipated start: November 2020 or until the position is filled.

Responsibilities:
The candidate will lead studies in applied data science, including but not limited to characterization of data drawn from distributed sensor arrays, extraction of embedded spatiotemporal features, development of predictive machine learning models based on these characterizations and features, and transfer methods for predictive models which bridge their original context to novel contexts. Research duties also involve facilitating the chain of custody of generated data (multi-sensor hardware assembly, deployment and maintenance; retrieving and quality control of data; managing curated data locally; ensuring remote data access with research partners); development of analysis tools which are capable of leveraging large volumes of data for model training, embedded feature extraction, and context transfer; and application of these and other tools and techniques to problems in applied data science and nuclear proliferation detection. The candidate will be expected to author peer-reviewed articles, engage on multiple research projects, set technical agendas, develop the technical vision for research objectives, draft and revise technical papers and reports using sound scientific judgment, and prepare and make presentations at research and technical conferences. In addition, the candidate will facilitate interactions with other research organizations and/or groups to promote collaboration and enhance the impact of research results.

Basic Qualifications (at the time of application):
  • PhD or equivalent international degree

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Computer Sciences or related/relevant field
  • Three years of postdoctoral research experience
  • In depth experience with data acquisition, data management, and data analysis
  • Demonstrated creativity and highly developed problem solving skills
  • Superior academic performance and publication record
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and teamwork
  • Experience with sensor hardware (especially multi-sensors) and their platforms, including production, installation, and maintenance
  • Demonstrated proficiency with common data science tools (e.g., Pandas, Keras, and Tensorflow) and languages (Python preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience with software package design and development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the nuclear fuel cycle and proliferation pathways

    Salary
To be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position provides full benefits.
