Duties/Responsibilities:

E – Perform independent research focusing on modeling the transmission and spread of emerging infectious diseases. Emphasis will be on SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 pandemic, but could expand to include other disease systems. This position will perform mathematical analysis of dynamical systems models and/or develop statistical models for forecasting and will collaborate with the PI to identify and contribute to the formalization of models for the spread and containment of COVID-19. Position will be responsible for interpretation of mathematical results and will write compute code in the R language for numerical analysis, model fitting, model evaluation/validation, and data visualization.

Duties/Responsibilities:

E – Position will be responsible for the dissemination of research results to both internal and external audiences, including drafting manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals; giving talks at local, national, or international conferences; drafting internal reports for project collaborators; and providing content for outward-facing websites for the lab, the Center for the Ecology of Infectious Diseases (CEID), and the CEID COVID-19 working group. Position will serve in a supporting role to presentations by other investigators as directed by the supervisor or CEID Communications Director.

Position Summary:

Position will contribute to ongoing work in the Drake lab focusing on the ecology of emerging pathogen transmission and spread. Specifically, this position will focus on the novel coronavirus and the disease it causes, COVID-19, although projects may expand to include other emerging pathogens.

This position will be expected to participate in the development and execution of a quantitative research project in his/her area of expertise. Research methodology may include dynamical systems modeling, stochastic processes, simulation, computational statistics, geostatistics, and/or machine learning. This position will be expected to prepare research plans, perform research including data analysis, draft both internal and external reports on the performed research, and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

PhD in mathematics, physics, ecology, epidemiology or related discipline relevant to infectious disease research

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies :

Proficiency in scientific programming, preferably in R. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Physical Demands:

Typical of someone spending most of the day at a computer. The individual will travel to/from buildings around campus as needed for meetings – primarily in the vicinity of the Odum School of Ecology. Off-campus travel for research, conferences, etc. may occasionally be needed.
