Departmental Overview

Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science—the country's only science center that is part of a top-tier, public research university. This distinctive affiliation allows the Hall to partner with world-class scientists, engineers, educational leaders, and teachers, with the goal of developing and disseminating the most innovative and effective science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs available today. Our mission is to inspire and foster science learning for all—especially for those with limited access to science.

The Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) is a project in the Lawrence Hall of Science. SEPUP develops secondary science curriculum for secondary level students in schools and informal settings and conducts professional development for K-12 science educators. Ben Koo is Director of the program. SEPUP is currently engaged in several curriculum projects. One of these projects is focused on redesigning Science and Global Issues, SEPUP's existing high school biology course, for alignment to the Next Generation Science Standards.


The incumbent will play a key role in SEPUP's development of curriculum materials for the redesign of this course and to supporting the pilot and field test of the redesigned curriculum. The incumbent will also contribute broadly to other ongoing projects within our group around curriculum development, research and development.
  • Plans and develops new curriculum units, and adjusts existing curriculum units for secondary science.
  • Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for curriculum development.
  • Identifies and develops evaluation tools for course field tests.
  • Evaluates and adjusts course curriculum through field test evaluation feedback.
  • May serve as a work leader in coordination of course development with colleagues.
  • May provide professional development training to teachers for designed curriculum.

Required Qualifications
  • Strong content background in one or more natural sciences (molecular biology or biochemistry and some knowledge of chemistry strongly preferred) and understanding of science pedagogy.
  • Working skills needed to develop and write age-appropriate activity-based educational science lessons and curriculum for secondary level students.
  • Thorough analytical skills to understand how business needs can be addressed through the design and delivery of new professional development programs and curriculum activities.
  • Thorough reading, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, and good presentation skills, for various audiences, including secondary level students and educators.
  • Thorough knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in delivering programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of current public educational programs and trends.
  • Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new presentations/courses to meet organizational needs.
  • Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.

  • Bachelor's degree in life, earth, or physical science (molecular biology or genetics strongly preferred) or related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Three to five years of professional experience, including science teaching, professional development, or curriculum development. A combination of two or all three preferred.

Salary & Benefits

This is a non-exempt, biweekly paid appointment. Hourly pay is commensurate with experience within the range of $24.14 - $34.87 per hour.

This is a 50% FTE (20 hours a week ) contract position for six months.
