Brown University seeks a new Director/Executive Director for its Swearer Center for Public Service who will also serve as Associate Dean of the College for Engaged Scholarship as Brown works to realize the inclusive campus envisioned in its 2016 Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan. https://www.brown.edu/about/administration/institutional-diversity/pathways. The Director provides leadership, strategic direction and high-level oversight to one of the nation’s leading centers for community engagement and the first to be housed in a university. Reporting directly to the Dean of the College and serving as a member of the College’s Senior Leadership Team and as an academic advising dean, the Director contributes to and supports the strategic direction of undergraduate education at Brown, especially around issues of experiential learning, community partnerships and student development. The Director will deepen collaborations with community partners and forge new alliances with strategic stakeholders in Providence and beyond while shifting narratives about communities from need-focused to asset-focused. The incumbent will also identify, develop and advance strategic partnerships with other Brown academic units, administrative departments and student centers, building bridges on campus, sustaining productive relationships with Brown students, staff, and faculty members across the University to encourage and support engaged pedagogy and research.
Drawing on Brown’s historic commitment to social and racial justice and collaborative community partnerships, the Director leads University efforts to integrate teaching, learning and practice in ways that advance pedagogy and produce public benefit through community engagement. The incumbent serves as an important advocate and university ambassador to the Providence and Rhode Island communities, contributing to positive social change in the Greater Providence community and Rhode Island overall. The incumbent is responsible for 20 full-time staff members, 14 AmeriCorps members, over 150 stipended student leaders, and 10+ part-time undergraduate and graduate student staff members; programming that engages nearly 1,200 undergraduate students each year; and a complex annual budget of $3.0 million comprising endowment, gift, grant, and general operating funds. As Associate Dean of the College, the incumbent fills the role of academic advisor and colleague to other College divisions and programs and serves as a member of various College and University committees as assigned.
Within the Center, the Director will lead an inclusive process to develop a vision and execute a long-range, actionable strategy that is aligned with Brown’s strategic plan and driven by community priorities with a collaborative, asset-based perspective that supports the vision for the Center and engaged scholarship with a social justice, anti-oppression, and anti-racist orientation. The Director serves as a unifying leader, fostering an inclusive and collaborative Center culture of continuous learning, high expectations and community building, promoting community, high morale, teamwork, unity of purpose and a willingness to engage in honest and open dialogue. The Director will also serve as an ambassador to internal and external audiences, including donors; scholars in the field; higher education leaders; and policy makers. The Director will collaborate with the Dean of the College and Brown’s Advancement Office to develop and execute a fundraising strategy for the Center.
- Collaboration and Partnership: Ability to sustain long-term relationships and steward diverse interests; demonstrated ability to work and communicate with a wide range of constituencies, including community partners, faculty, staff, and students. Experience designing and executing an inclusive vision.
- Community Engagement: Leader in the community, public service, non-profit, and/or academic spheres. Demonstrated knowledge of building positive change for social and racial justice. Experience developing sustained, asset-focused collaborations with community partners.

Strong commitment to continuous improvement and accountability. Experience leading and managing a large and diverse team. Demonstrated experience advocating for and making change towards aspirational goals for diversity, inclusion and equity.
- Master’s degree required; PhD or other terminal degree preferred.
- 7+ years of related experience, at least 3 years of which must have been in a management position of significant responsibility.
