Princeton University

The Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics seeks applicants for Senior Research Specialist I to join the laboratory of Joshua Rabinowitz. The key roles for this position involve scientific experimentation, lab management and organization, coordination, and training. Our lab aims to obtain a quantitative understanding of metabolism, with the overarching goal of applying this knowledge to the treatment of human disease (cancer, obesity, aging) and the production of biofuels. This is achieved by applying liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) and isotope tracing, methods in which the lab is a world leader, to yeast, mammalian cells, and animal specimens.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to be responsible for the day-to-day management of the lab, as well as the streamlining of lab operations for efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The ideal candidate would be expected to contribute to collaborative research efforts, as well as lead their own independent research project. In addition to research, the specialist will also assist in training incoming lab members and also coordinate collaborations with outside labs and universities. Candidates with strong track records of accomplishment in any biochemistry-related discipline combined with strong skills in metabolomics, genetics, or any area of mammalian cell biology are particularly encouraged to apply. Prior CRISPR interference technology experience is desired.

Salary will include the full benefits package. The position is open and review of applications will begin immediately. This will be a one-year term position, with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued funding.

Specific activities include:

  • Serve as senior operations manager and oversee day to day management of the lab, including equipment and supply purchasing, reagent management and inventory, communication and negotiation with vendors.
  • Develop and run screening assays, both biochemical and cellular, for small molecule inhibitor development efforts.
  • Run metabolomics analysis by LC-MS.
  • Develop and test CRISPR cell lines.
  • Handle lab organizational tasks including purchasing, inventory, and maintenance.
  • Establish effective and durable lab management systems to track reagents and manage samples, freezer space, and data.
  • Optimize overall lab operations for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Negotiate with vendors to secure best prices.
  • Coordinate collaborations with outside labs and universities.
  • Train incoming students and postdocs on proper lab protocols and procedures.
  • Participate in group meetings.

Essential requirements/skills:

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • Several (10+) years of relevant professional experience in research.
  • Strong attention to detail and meticulous lab notebook keeping.
  • Willingness to train and technically support undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot and optimize protocols, and manage projects.
  • Capacity to work and perform both independently and collaboratively.
Other relevant (but not required) experience:

  • Lab management.
  • Mass spectrometry.
  • CRISPR technology.
  • Molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience working with mice and/or rats.
This position is subject to the University's background check policy.
