Position Summary The Princeton Writing Program invites applications for Lecturers to teach topic-based, multidisciplinary Writing Seminars to first-year students. The Writing Seminars are designed to help students learn how to frame compelling questions and problems, position an argument within an academic debate, substantiate and organize claims, and purposefully integrate a variety of source materials. Every first-year student completes a Writing Seminar to fulfill the University writing requirement. The transferable skills to which students are introduced in their Writing Seminars serve as a foundation for their ongoing development as critical researchers and writers across the university. We therefore seek applications from candidates with strong interests in writing pedagogy and from all fields of study in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and the arts. College-level teaching experience and the Ph.D. are expected. The typical teaching load is two Writing Seminars per term. Applications for part-time Lecturers may be considered according to the needs of the Program and at the discretion of the Director. Lecturers will be responsible for developing syllabi for their seminars in accord with course and assignment guidelines established by the Writing Program. As part of this teaching-intensive postdoctoral program, faculty will benefit from regular pedagogy workshops and professional development opportunities. The initial appointment period will be one academic year, renewable for a total of three academic years. Lecturers completing their third year may be considered for a second three-year term appointment. Appointment and reappointment decisions are made according to the needs of the Program and on the merit of each applicant's record of teaching, service, and scholarship. The salary offered for full-time Lecturers will be a minimum of $69,400. Benefits-eligible full-time positions also include the opportunity to apply for research grants and travel grants. We expect that the initial period of appointment will be from August 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021; however, all new faculty must attend full-day workshops May 18 - May 22, 2020, and be accessible by email the month after to develop their Writing Seminars in consultation with Writing Program directors. Faculty development meetings are also required throughout the academic year, including four full days of follow-up workshops from August 17 - 20, 2020, and a faculty retreat on August 31. The Lecturer search is open until filled. The deadline for full consideration is Wednesday, January 15, 2020. Apply online at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/14621 and include the following: a current CV; a cover letter reflecting on your approach to teaching writing and how it relates to your experience and scholarly research; a 200-word course description for a multidisciplinary Writing Seminar; an academic writing sample (please limit to 25 pages); and contact information for three references. Please see this year's course descriptions for models (http://writing.princeton.edu/seminars). This position is subject to the University's background check policy. The Writing Program is committed to sustaining a diverse community of scholars dedicated to promoting a culture of growth and discovery among students at the University. We strongly encourage women and members from underrepresented groups to apply. Essential Qualifications Successful candidates will be strong and reflective academic writers, have demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching and mentoring, and have carefully considered the role of writing in teaching their courses. The Ph.D. is expected. Preferred Qualifications Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience teaching topic-based writing courses or writing-intensive courses, as well as to candidates with Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), Writing in the Disciplines (WID), and/or Writing Center experience.
