Air University's Air War College invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of Professor of Joint Military Operations in the West Space Seminar. This position prepares students to lead in a joint environment at the strategic level across the range of military operations; to develop cross-domain mastery of joint, air, space, cyberspace power and its strategic contributions to national security; and to advance innovative thought on National Security issues.

Responsibilities

The primary purpose of this position is to instruct senior military officers, International Fellows, and civilian equivalents in joint, multi-agency, and multinational military operations across the full spectrum of conflict as part of the development of strategic and institutional leaders. This includes the development of curriculum and instructional periods, support of students in professional studies and research, and teach in one or more of the following areas: Strategic Leadership, Joint Warfighting, and Spacepower in the West Seminar. This includes advising students undertake professional research and writing.

  • Teaches in the Core and in elective courses covering joint, multi-agency, and multinational military actions occurring across the range of military operations and future conflict areas. Accomplishes teaching duties in classroom, exercises, and wargame environments. Provides detailed feedback to students and documentation of student progress; instructs students in a seminar environment in core course, elective course, regional studies program, and other core courses as determined by AWC requirements. Produces curriculum under JPME/ AU/ AWC/Department guidance for core, elective, and regional studies courses including curriculum content, instructional methods/material, and testing/evaluation instruments. Supports curriculum production and Instructional Period (IP) development to include authoring/selecting readings, building scope sheet/faculty guides, sourcing speakers (if required), conducting faculty workshops, and preparing exercises/wargames/case studies meeting suspense and conformance guidance. Serves as subject matter expert and advisor to AWC and AU on subjects of relevance to academic background and teaching areas.
  • Engages in professional research and writing in areas of expertise. Actively seeks publication of book manuscripts as well as scholarly works such as articles, monographs, and book reviews for publication in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, professional journals, and other outlets. Presents results of research at appropriate conferences and symposia. Supervises and advises student research in course work, research projects and professional studies papers.
  • Serves in faculty positions supporting personnel and programs as determined by Department Chair, Dean of Academic Affairs or AWC Commandant. Delivers lectures, conducts seminars, participates in panel discussions related to AWC curriculum and in area of expertise at various institutions such as other professional military education schools, civilian institutions, and other learned societies. Attends conferences and workshops to acquire relevant material for inclusion into AWC courses. Counsels and advises students on academics and professional development.

Works under the direct supervision of the Chair, Leadership and Warfighting who outlines overall objectives and resources. The supervisor evaluates the work for overall soundness and support of the goals of the college. Due to constant changes in practices, techniques, and information, the incumbent generates most of the work based on knowledge of the program area and broad knowledge of the mission. Completed work is reviewed from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, compatibility with other work efforts, or effectiveness in meeting requirements or achieving expected results.

Qualifications

Master's Degree or higher in relevant fields; strong knowledge of joint, multi-agency and multinational military operations, doctrine, and processes.

Strong knowledge, operational experience, and/or practical application of Space Planning, Space Acquisition, Spacepower Theory, Space Strategy, Space History, Space Law or Space Policy.

Applicants should possess and be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of educational requirements, instructional methods, and evaluation methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of a variety or research methods and ability to conduct and lead research.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team to design, develop, execute, and evaluate course material.
  • Ability to work effectively with graduate-level faculty and exercise peer leadership in working with senior and mid-level college leadership in the development of senior leader development programs.
  • Ability to develop curriculum and present the material to senior leadership.
  • Skill in written and oral communication to brief and/or lecture a wide variety of civilian and military audiences to include Air Force and DoD Agencies.
