Definition:
The West Valley-Mission Community College District is searching for a visionary leader to serve as Executive Director of Advancement. With this new administrative position, the District endeavors to build on the already vibrant alumni and community-based giving that has supported the institution for over five decades.

The Executive Director is a senior level classified manager who is the chief fundraising officer of the West Valley-Mission Community College District. This person provides leadership, administration and support for the Foundation, oversees and leads fundraising efforts that are aligned with the Foundation/District and Colleges strategic plans. This person establishes and maintains positive relationships with donors, prospects, partners and the Foundation Board. The Executive Director reports directly to the Chancellor and confers with the college presidents in matters pertaining to their individual campuses.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT

Santa Clara County, home of the Silicon Valley, is a world-renowned center for high technology and an important business and financial center. It is also the Bay Area's most populous county, with almost 2 million residents, and the site of California's third largest city, San Jose. West Valley and Mission Colleges serve an area of approximately 350,000 residents. The West Valley-Mission Community College District is one of the largest employers in Santa Clara County.

The District is composed of two colleges: West Valley College in Saratoga and Mission College in Santa Clara. Together they enroll more than 17,375 students with diverse backgrounds. Courses are taught during day, evening, and weekend hours, in addition to online courses and distance learning. More than 1,525 faculty and staff work for the District, which has a budget exceeding $135,287,206. The service area includes the cities of Santa Clara, Saratoga, Campbell, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno; and parts of San Jose, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, and Santa Cruz County.

The District benefits from a strong alumnus and giving community that has collaborated at record levels in order to foster a well-rounded educational experience for our students and provide greater resources for our faculty.

The Executive Director will further build collaborative external and internal relationships to foster innovative programs, expand alumni involvement, and reach the vast potential of giving opportunities to members of the Silicon Valley community.

Assignment:
This is a classified administrator position with an anticipated start date of November 2020. This is an exempt position and is not subject to overtime.


Salary and Benefits:
Salary:

  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $172,379-$183,586 annually (Administrative Salary Schedule, Range 30, Steps A-C).
  • Annual salary step increases to maximum of salary range, $214,901 (Administrative Salary Schedule, Range 30, Step G)

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

1. Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

AND

2. Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration or a related field.

AND

3. Seven years of increasingly responsible experience in fundraising in the non-profit sector, including two years of administrative and management responsibility.


Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Work with the Chancellor and advancement foundation board to identify and develop relationships with external individuals and organizations that may provide private funds, in-kind support and/or related partnerships with the colleges.
  • Develop and implement division goals and objectives; recommend and administer policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate division activities with those of other divisions, departments, and outside agencies and organizations; provide staff assistance to the Chancellor and Board of Trustees; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  • Direct, oversee, and participate in the development of the division’s work plan; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
  • Supervise and participate in the development and administration of the advancement foundation budget; direct the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; review all bank account and investment statements.
  • Select, train, motivate, and evaluate staff; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; implement discipline procedures; maintain discipline and high standards necessary for the efficient and professional operation of the division.
  • Prepare and disseminate information and promotional material to district and college staff to acquaint them with potential funding and local philanthropy trends; provide individual and small group assistance to faculty and staff in the development of strategy, proposals and applications for private funding.
  • Represent the division to outside groups and organizations; participate in outside community and professional groups and committees; provide counsel and advice as necessary.
  • Research and prepare comprehensive reports and studies; prepare written correspondence as necessary.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other district employees, donors, and the general public using principles of good customer service.
  • Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.
  • Be an integral team player, which involves such skills as flexibility, cooperation, and effective communication.
  • Articulate the vision, mission, goals and needs of the Colleges.
  • Work closely with the Foundation Board, chancellor and deans on fundraising initiatives, and methodologies.
  • Manage a portfolio of 50 or more major gift level donors and prospects through the entire cycle of development from research to cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and recognition
  • Secure donations and expand public support through a diversified strategic fundraising plan
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
