The successful candidates must be eligible for academic appointments at the rank of Assistant/Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date will be in the fall of 2020, with the specific date to be determined based on mutual agreement.

Pain management is an integral component of the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management at all of our member hospitals. Our multidisciplinary program provides care to thousands of patients suffering from acute pain, transitional pain, and chronic pain. Our experts in Pain Medicine have continuously delivered excellent patient-centred clinical care, have developed a comprehensive educational program that attracts residents and fellows from all over the world, and have been highly productive in practice-changing research. As a result, our Pain Medicine Program is world-renowned and is uniquely poised to contribute to our goal of becoming the premier Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management. In addition, the Department is a key partner in the Toronto Academic Pain Medicine Institute (TAPMI), which is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary academic pain program serving as the hub for chronic pain care in the region.

The Pain Site Director positions are for a 3-5 year term, with possibility of renewal for a second 5-year term following a structured review process. The primary responsibilities will include: 1) to devise and implement Departmental strategy in all aspects of Pain Medicine; 2) to assist with the recruitment of site-leads for acute, transitional, and chronic pain where appropriate; 3) to facilitate the delivery of optimal clinical care; 4) to establish a robust clinical quality assurance program; and 5) to serve as a member of the pain council. The Directors will report directly to the UHN Anesthesiologist-in-Chief and Site Chiefs.

The successful candidates will provide clinical care at their respective site, including supervision and teaching of students, residents, and fellows. Non-clinical time will be provided for this administrative position. Additional non-clinical time will be awarded according to a merit-based system. On-call services will be provided in rotation.

The successful candidates must have a medical degree, postgraduate fellowship training, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in anesthesia (or equivalent) and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The successful candidates must have proven clinical skills at a high level, evidence of demonstrated excellence in research and/or education and a commitment to teaching students, residents, and fellows. Compensation will depend on the amount of clinical work performed and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and within the usual range for an anesthesiologist in the Province of Ontario ($300,000-500,000 per annum).
