Medical Director for Anesthesia Assistant Program (UHN)The Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management is seeking a staff anesthesiologist for the position of Medical Director for the Anesthesia Assistant (AA) Program at the University Health Network (UHN) and Michener Institute. The anticipated state date will be January 1, 2021 or one that is mutually agreed upon. At the Michener Institute, the medical director will report directly to the Academic Chair, Critical Care Programs and contribute to bi-annual Program Advisory Council (PAC) meetings, organize instructors for the 12-week winter cohort and 2-week residential program, liaise with clinical mentors at students’ base hospitals, and arrange selective rotations for clinical students at UHN and oversee their placements. Teaching responsibilities include but are not limited to teaching 1-2 topics from the winter curriculum and offer lectures, case studies and simulation sessions based on those topics and present lectures or seminars during residential week. The medical director will approve and assess each student’s research topic and presentation during residential week, create and participate in simulation examinations during residential weeks, review each student’s clinical binder to assess for completeness and offer detailed suggestions on written material submitted, and organize and oversee remedial rotations as required. At UHN, the medical director will report to the anesthesiologist-in-chief and site chiefs. Liaise with the manager of the AA program to provide AA services across all sites, create and revise policies, medical directives and PPF governing AA practice, oversee UHN specific training for new staff, provide simulation sessions for current staff and oversee clinical training for UHN AA students. The medical director will also be responsible for coordinating clinical placements for Nova Southeastern AA students, liaise with other organizations as required including the University of Toronto, Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society AA section, Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists and Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. The successful candidate will receive 1-day per week protected time for administrative duties. Additional protected time will be provided according to a merit-based system for educational and research activities. The successful candidate will provide anesthetic care throughout the UHN surgical programs. Clinical supervision and teaching of students, residents, and fellows is expected. On-call services will be provided in rotation. The successful candidate must have proven leadership and clinical skills and evidence of demonstrated excellence in education or research. He or she must have a medical degree, postgraduate fellowship training, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in anesthesia (or equivalent), and eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Compensation for clinical activities will be based on clinical billings through the practice plan and will depend on the amount of clinical and administrative/academic work performed and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and within the usual range for an anesthesiologist in the Province of Ontario.
