Job Summary

Perform research on cellulose synthesis and growth anisotropy under the guidance and supervision of the Principal Investigator. The appointee is expected to establish some independence in research design and execution, and to publish their work as appropriate in collaboration with the principal investigator.

Essential Functions

  • Maintenance of tobacco BY-2 cell cultures.
  • Development of novel BY-2 cell lines that express genes relevant for the project.
  • Quantifying growth anisotropy of BY-2 cells in microfluidic chambers.
  • Quantifying speed and character of cellulose synthase complex movement in BY-2 cells.
  • Quantifying cellulose abundance and crystallinity in BY-2 cells.
  • Use and maintenance of the confocal fluorescence microscope.
  • Development of a novel polarized light microscopy methods for BY-2 cells.
  • Carrying out analogous experiments on the roots of maize or other appropriate species.
  • Supervising undergraduate and graduate researchers.

Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Ph.D. in Biology or related field required.
  • Experience in plant molecular biology required.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Expertise in light-microscopy highly desirable.
  • Experience with plant tissue culture highly desirable.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Typical office/lab environment.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. It is expected the appointee will work extended hours to complete individual experiments.

Salary Information

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and is consistent with bargaining unit contract.
