GeneralMerchandise Buyer maintains the general merchandise division of the Bookstore. Themain responsibilities include managing the general merchandise inventory soldat all bookstore locations, selecting and purchasing merchandise items,tracking sales history, determining mark-downs, and assisting with thecoordination of sales and events. This position reports to the BookstoreManager.

Maintain general merchandise items in the POS system, which includes entering new items, tracking sales history, establishing re-order quantities, negotiating with vendors, placing orders, and defining pricing within our margin standards.

Select and purchase new general merchandiseitems as well as coordinating sales events, promotions, mark downs, andclearance.

Build product assortments, cross-merchandisingbetween department, and visual merchandising including planning of store salesfloor layouts and updating window displays on a monthly basis.

Manage general merchandise inventory anddelegate merchandise transferred between Bookstore locations.

Stay current on trends in school supplies,apparel, gift and impulse items, and software and technology.

Stock and display electronics available forsale, assist customers with electronics purchase, software questions, andspecial orders; as well as maintaining detailed electronic inventory withrelevant consumer information.

Develop and enhance professional relationshipsand communication with external vendors as well as Waubonsee staff in order toensure that the Bookstore’s general merchandise items reflect college cultureand community needs.

Collaborate with Marketing and Communicationsteam for merchandise design approval and improvement on brand guidelines.

Operate cash register in the sale of materials,refunds, exchanges, and department charges based on business needs.

Provide back-up and assist students, staff,etc. at customer service counter including entering student A/R vouchers whenneeded.

Assist with year-end physical inventory.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Two years progressively responsible experience in retail; specifically in inventory management, purchasing, negotiation, visual merchandising, computer and point of sale systems, sales, and customer service; branding, social media, and event planning experience preferred.

Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of college faculty and staff, students, and external vendors.

Ability to move or handle merchandise throughout the store, generally weighing 0–50 pounds.

Computer skills required, including familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).

Valid Illinois driver’s license and ability to travel between all Waubonsee Community College campuses as needed required.

Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates.

Willingness and ability to travel toeducational seminars and trade shows required.
