Position Summary:

Under minimal direction of the Director for General Accounting and Internal Controls, the incumbent is responsible for the major functional areas of University Funds Accounting and Banking operation. Performs the highest level of accounting, and analytical activities in general fund, endowment fund, loan fund and current fund groups. The incumbent is considered an expert in these broad functional accounting areas. Performance at this top level often deals with new issues, programs, systems, or proposals, requiring good management perspective and foresight, excellent interpersonal skills, innovative solutions to problems, precedents establishing, possession of specific knowledge of a wide range of concepts, including generally accepted accounting principles; governmental accounting standards and pronouncements; and statement of Auditing Standards to analyze and implement enhancements and mandated changes to the financial system and reporting requirement. Analyzes problems that utilize advanced independent methodologies where standard practices may not be applicable. The incumbent must possess a thorough knowledge of University accounting and finance principles, practices, and procedures or proven ability to develop such knowledge. Acts as a principal fund accountant in his/her area of expertise to campus management, departments and accounting staff. The incumbent is required to take assignments with broad terms and general objectives and break down into steps to achieve desired results. The incumbent utilizes strong creative thinking skills, knowledge, and experience to understand the overall picture and identify the best methods to accomplish specific tasks. Analysis may extend beyond incumbent’s current knowledge and experience, especially with new proposals or unique areas. In these circumstances, the incumbent must be resourceful and research, gain greater knowledge, and perform appropriate analysis. The incumbent will work closely with internal and external auditors on Interim and Post audits and be a functional expert to support key activities directly associated with UCI’s Internal Controls and Risk Management program for Accounting and Fiscal Services. Requires the ability to lead, plan, manage and coordinate campus wide strategies to meet stringent compliance requirements.

Compensation Range:

Annually: $87,000.00 - $90,000.00

Required:

BA/BS in appropriate field and 7+ years’ accounting related experience or equivalent combination of experience and education.

Specialized skill and knowledge to provide advice to key functional areas in campus-wide fund accounting.

In-depth knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices, e.g., GAAP, GASB and SAS.

Professional skill in analyzing complex accounting and/or technical data.

Specific skill in accounting report preparation.

Proficient skills in University fund management.

Excellent skill to define problems promptly, identify relevant factors, formulate logical conclusions, and come up with solutions to solve problems.

Skill in proposal development, program evaluation, and research methodologies.

Skill to interpret accounting and/or campus policies and procedures that may be complex or incompletely stated.

Tactful skill to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with people at all levels in order to explain policies and procedures, present facts, findings, conclusion, and recommendations clearly and concisely.

1-2 years of experience in supervising personnel.

Skill to plan, organize or operate a diversified fiscal closing operation and financial systems development.

Working knowledge of electronic spreadsheet and proven experience in complex spreadsheet development.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access for Windows environment.

Preferred:

Sound knowledge of UC policies and procedures.

California licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Master of Business administration (MBA) degree in Accounting.

Experience working in a regulated environment with limited resources.

Working knowledge of UCI financial systems, UCOP financial systems and sub-systems.

Special Conditions:

Must be able to work overtime on weekdays or weekends. Must have a valid California driver’s license and participate in the DMV Pull Program.
