Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies offers B.A. and M.A. programs in Sociology and a B.S. program in Interdisciplinary Studies, with minors in Africana Studies and Sociology, and a graduate certificate in Applied Sociology.
The Department of Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Science, Political Science, and History offers the B.A. in Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Science, Political Science and History. In addition, IGPH offers a minor in all four areas mentioned and in Geospatial Intelligence, Philosophy, Public Administration and Policy, Sustainability, Sustainability, and Environmental Sustainability. The department also offers a Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) Certificate Program.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies and the Department of Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Science, Political Science, and History at Fayetteville State University invite applications for a full-time academic advisor position. The academic advisor will provide academic advisement to students enrolled in majors assigned to the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies as well as the Department of Intelligence Studies, Geospatial Sciences, Political Science, and History. The academic advisor will ensure that advisees take full advantage of academic support opportunities, and that students experience no unnecessary obstacles to degree completion.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Serve as initial point of contact for any student who declares their major within the advisor’s department.
2. Respond to inquiries from prospective students and majors via email, phone, in-person, or campus visitations in a timely fashion.
3 .Assist Students with the declaration of major process, including providing advice to those who are unable to declare their major due to their GPA or other issues.
4. Process declarations of major, enter the appropriate information into Banner, including the assignment of a faculty mentor.
5. Review transcripts, certifications, or other official forms identifying approved academic credit and evaluate the course equivalencies for the university core curriculum and the degree program.
6. Develop a Student Education Plan in DegreeWorks for each student which provides a clear path to earning a degree in their chosen major.
7. Create and maintain appropriate records for each student which contains all appropriate documents, recommendations, and follow-ups.
8. Provide on-going academic advising for each student in the major, which includes:
a. Assisting the student with the selection of their courses each semester/term and providing them with registration training and support as needed.
b. Completing appropriate student paperwork, such as requests for course waivers/substitutions, course overloads, permission to take courses at other institutions, course repeats, etc.
c. Monitoring the progress of majors toward graduation and intervening with majors to encourage registration, appropriate course selection, use of available academic support and other resources, timely application for graduation, etc.
d. Conduct periodic graduation eligibility checks on seniors and as students apply for graduation.
9. Provide guidance to students experiencing academic difficulty or other problems.
Provide support to students seeking re-admittance or appeal or for degree completion.
10. Act as a liaison between the departments and students, as well as other appropriate units within the university, such as Admissions, the Registrar, Catalog Officer, etc.
11. Attend all department meetings on a rotation schedule to provide information and support in the areas of academic advising, student concerns, and potential course scheduling, curriculum, or catalog issues.
12. Participate in campus-wide professional advisor meetings and development as organized by the Professional Advising Coordinator. Report information to departments as needed.
13. Provide reports on majors, cohorts, and other advising or enrollment issues as requested.
14. Participate in programs designed to recruit and retain students and majors, such as the Fall Preview, Spring Open House, Majors Fair, and First Steps. Follow up with potential students and majors to encourage them to apply.
15. Provide support and training on DegreeWorks to faculty/mentors as requested.
16. Develop and distribute departmental information on advising, career/internship opportunities, departmental programs and specific courses.
17. Engage in any other academic advising related duties assigned by department chair.
An earned master’s degree from an accredited institution preferably in the degree program to which they are assigned.
Some work experience in higher education, preferably in academic advising, counseling admissions, enrollment management or student affairs.Knowledge skills and abilities:
•Requires the ability to use a computer to complete duties and knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) as well as other related student management software.
•Must have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; be able to manage a wide variety of records, files, and reports.
•Must have personal and professional attributes to include punctuality, diligence, commitment, integrity, and confidentiality.
