Following the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the incumbent will be responsible for conducting daily health checks and taking care of animals housed at any of the Edinburg, McAllen, and Brownsville facilities. Husbandry actions include: feeding, providing water, manipulating and sanitizing dirty cages, unloading feed and bedding bags and placing items into storage, properly handling small animals and performing daily health checks, lighting and temperature checks and euthanasia.
Incumbent will also perform routine cleaning of floors, walls and ceilings, record information, keep logs, and operate specialized equipment. Training in electronic animal management software will be provided for graduate assistant to enter data (animal health and room checks) as needed. This position will require frequent travel between campus sites and some weekend and holiday work. Some other duties as assigned.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

•Must be a full-time graduate student (9 hours during the Fall or Spring semester and 6 hours during Summer months)
•Able to work well with diverse groups of people
•Detail and Analytical oriented
•Effective communication skills for interacting with staff/faculty
•Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office, preferably in Excel
