Area Coordinator for Diversity and Inclusion
Shenandoah University’s Division of Student Affairs is accepting applications for an Area Coordinator for Diversity and Inclusion. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, Virginia.
Area Coordinator Responsibilities:
The Area Coordinator (AC) will serve as a member of the Office of Residence Life professional staff and is responsible for the management of several residence hall communities. The AC will also focus on supporting and mentoring residents, supervising several resident assistant staffs, serving as a conduct officer and coordinating educational out-of-classroom experiences that engage and inspire student learning and development.
The AC will provide leadership in the coordination and implementation of several departmental functions, including student conduct, the housing assignments, staff development and training, resident assistant evaluation and selection processes, roommate mediations, restorative practices and room changes processes, hall opening/closing procedures, staff appreciation/recognition and programming.
To accomplish the goals of the position, the AC must be knowledgeable about facility management, university policies and procedures, crisis management, leadership development and student development theories and best practices. The AC has the unique opportunity to work with and mentor students in their own growth and development. Along with the responsibilities of this position comes an opportunity to learn about organizational leadership in higher education. ACs are encouraged to advance themselves through on-the-job training as well as professional development opportunities
The Area Coordinator for Diversity and Inclusion (ACDI). ACDI will be responsible for organizing and facilitating diversity and inclusion training and programming for residence life staff and residential communities. The ACDI will be responsible for supporting community development initiatives with project pride (vandalism prevention campaign), works with the Dean of Students Office on the Community Conduct Council and restorative justice practices. The ACDI will represent residence life on division wide committee programs and initiatives related to diversity and inclusion programming. The ACDI will be a liaison for residence life with the Mosaic Center for Diversity. Which includes, helping to develop and maintain a comprehensive offering of social justice and diversity training and workshop opportunities for the campus community. Creating curriculum for new additions to Inclusion & Diversity training, such as Understanding Race, Student Activism, Disability on Campus, etc. Becoming a trained facilitator of trainings and workshops including but not limited to Safe Zone (sexual and gender diversity), Navigating Intercultural Understanding (Culture 101), and Difficult Conversations. Offering education and training opportunities in the Residence Halls.
- Must have a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree in higher education or a related field strongly preferredMust have experience in higher education programming, specifically supporting and promoting diversity and multicultural initiativesExperience working with underserved student populations in a multicultural/LGBTQ+/women’s center or a similar department within higher education is strongly preferredPrior crisis management and or residence life experience strongly preferredPrior experience as a conduct officer and BASICS facilitator preferredSupervisory experience preferredMust have ability to work with a diverse student populationMust have strong organizational skills and possess an eye for detailMust be able to multi-task and meet deadlines required for reporting and submitting paperworkMust have an understanding of and an appreciation for university policies and procedures, and serve as a conduct officer for the Office of Residence LifeMust have above-average communication and leadership skillsMust be able to demonstrate problem solving skillsMust show competence in technology and proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPointMust be highly motivated, enthusiastic and outgoingMust understand the value of out-of-class engagement in the campus environmentMust have excellent decision-making abilitiesMust have experience working with and mentoring students
