The primary mission of Counseling & Psychological Services (C&PS) is to provide services to students and the university community that support and enhance the education of the whole person, as well as nurture a healthy and productive learning-centered campus environment. All C&PS services are provided and designed to promote academic excellence and retention at SDSU. Counseling & Psychological Services provides, either directly or through collaboration and referral, a variety of counseling services, (e.g., individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, short-term psychotherapy), assessment and evaluation, faculty and staff consultation, and professional training/supervision, consistent with the educational mission of the university.

The Clinical Case Manager position will involve the provision of the following: The full range of case management services, assessment, referral, consultation, coordination of care, and psychological services to students from a wide range of multicultural backgrounds presenting complex psychosocial, social, personal, and family problems; crisis/suicide intervention and trauma response/debriefing; prevention education, and training services to individuals (e.g., students, faculty, staff, parents, administrators), campus groups (e.g., student clubs, residence hall communities, fraternities, sororities) and organizational units (e.g., Associated Students, University College's Academic Departments, Student Affairs Offices).

There are two vacancies. These are full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary positions anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2021, with the possibility of reappointment. These positions are designated exempt under FLSA and are not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

A doctorate in behavioral sciences, counseling, psychology, or a related academic field, or a California license as a Psychologist, Marriage & Family Therapist or Clinical Social Worker.

Candidates must have experience and clinical effectiveness with multicultural counseling approaches with ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities. Experience with case management, brief interventions, and crisis management in a college counseling center is desired (may be substituted by experience with transitional-aged youth (TAY) populations in other settings). Significant knowledge of and experience making discerning judgments regarding complex ethical and legal issues is required.

Licenses and/or Certifications Required

Candidates must possess a California license or be license-eligible to practice Psychology in California (license must be obtained within 18 months of date of hire), or possess a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist or Clinical Social Worker.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and clinical effectiveness with motivational counseling approaches.
  • Ability to identify potential barriers and empower students to access services both on and off campus.
  • Outreach with ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities and other traditionally underrepresented students.
  • Trauma response debriefing capabilities.
  • Previous university counseling center experience
  • Knowledge of other University systems of case management and support services for students.

Incumbent must have a demonstrable respect for diversity and an ability to effectively work from a multicultural perspective with people from a wide range of backgrounds and value systems. Specifically, candidate must meet at least two of the following criteria:

  • Has demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline
  • Has experience or has demonstrated commitment to clinical work with underrepresented students
  • Has experience or has demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research/practice
  • Has experience in or has demonstrated commitment to research/practice that engages underrepresented communities
  • Has expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross-cultural communication and collaboration
  • Has research/practice interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $6,400 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,779 – $10,814 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
