The Division of Hematology/Oncology provides cutting edge cancer care and treatment through innovative cancer treatment research beyond settling for the status quo of guidelines. We educate and train young oncologists to be oncology thinkers and not just doers.

Job Duties

The Division of Hematology/Oncology is seeking a Registered Nurse to work in a centralized Clinical Trials Office and provide clinical trials to patients. The selected candidate will coordinate patient care following protocol guidelines and identify problems immediately and find resolutions. This position also serves as a clinical resource to patients/families, nurses, physicians, and others to answer questions related to drug protocols; drug dosages, routes, and schedules; side effects; and symptom management. The Nurse Specialist serves all departments as assigned and centralizes protocol activity; assures coordinated multidisciplinary care to both inpatients and outpatients; establishes a patient outcome database; and monitors patients’ quality of care and quality of life. The selected candidate will maintain working relationships with pharmaceutical companies, cooperative groups, physicians, patients, clinical trial nurses, the IRB Coordinator, the data manager, and the administrative staff. The individual in this position provides clinical skills needed for each study including venipuncture, intravenous infusions and injections.

CLINICAL SUPPORT POSITION – NOT SUBJECT TO STATE HUMAN RESOURCES ACT.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Minimum Education/Experience

Graduation from state-accredited school of registered nursing and two years of nursing experience, with at least one year in the assigned specialty area. Must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation

For entry into this class, graduation from a state accredited school of professional nursing and two years of RN experience, with at least one year in the assigned specialty area. Must hold a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. For entry above the 50th percentile of the pay band, must have at least three years of experience in the specialty area assigned.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

1 year experience in the specialty of hematology/oncology and/or clinical trials

Possess thorough and extensive knowledge of nursing practices and procedures in a highly specialized area

Skills to design study protocols

License or Certification required by the Department
