About the Department:

The main purpose of the Prestage Department of Poultry Science is to support the North Carolina poultry industry through extension, research, and teaching activities. Poultry is the largest income-producing commodity in the state and the Prestage Department of Poultry Science works together with different producers, commodity organizations, allied industries, and other state agencies in educating and distributing information gleaned from research and extension activities at the university level. The Department conducts research and extension projects in physiology, biotechnology, microbiology, immunology, nutrition, toxicology, genetics, animal well-being, and management with the ultimate goal to improve the production and wholesomeness of poultry as a food product.

Braswell Family Farms is a fourth-generation family-owned company producing and marketing quality feed and eggs for American families and businesses. They have a deep commitment to family, stewardship, integrity, and teamwork to accomplish goals. With this in mind and their commitment to the Egg Industry the Braswell Family of Nashville, NC established a permanent endowment fund with the UNC System’s Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund. This donation created the Braswell Family Distinguished Professorship in Commercial Layer Management, Physiology or Nutrition in the Prestage Department of Poultry Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Essential Job Duties:

North Carolina is ranked 7th in U.S. egg production, contributing $444 million to the state’s economy. The Prestage Department of Poultry Science has played a major role in the success and growth of this segment of the poultry industry. The coming decades are expected to bring considerable changes to the egg industry as consumer demands and other market forces drive fundamental changes to the housing and management systems developed over the past 50 years. This will require integration of considerable physiological, reproductive, nutritional, and management-focused research to promote sustainability of commercial egg production.

Through this Braswell Family Endowed Layer Professorship and Extension Specialist position, this position will develop a productive, externally-funded extension and innovative research program that takes a multi-disciplinary approach to applicable areas of commercial egg production and processing. The incumbent should examine the interface between reproduction and dynamic nutritional needs within the diverse management systems associated with the commercial egg industry.

The candidate is expected to coordinate with other faculty in the Department in order to develop the new online Egg Certificate Program for industry which may also be graduate level courses associated with the graduate programs. These courses will be a part of the portfolio of courses that fulfill the requirements of a proposed Egg Certificate Program in Poultry Science.

The new faculty member is expected to seek funds from federal granting agencies as well as from industry-sponsored research.

Inclusiveness and diversity are critical to the success of the College and University as a whole. Therefore, the successful candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is respectful and welcoming of all groups.

This position supports the NCSU-CALS Food Animal Initiative. North Carolina is a recognized leader in food animal production. Agriculture contributes $84 billion to the state’s economy and generates 663,200 jobs. More than 68% stems directly from food-animal systems. Even more if you factor in offshore marine fisheries and plant-based agribusiness that supplies feedstock.

We can help North Carolina become the world leader in food animal sciences by coordinating new research with existing proven infrastructure. CALS has partnered with the College of Veterinary Medicine to lead this transformative initiative, and as it grows, we will enlist the support of our partners at NC State, other land grant universities, government and industry.
