The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) in parntership with the North Carolina Local Food Council (NCLFC), is seeking highly-motivated students from a variety of backgrounds to participate in a remote internship program. Intern appointments are for approximately 16 weeks. See descriptions below for specific information on each position.

Brief Program Overview
During the 16 weeks, the intern will have the opportunity to:

Assist businesses with expanding their marketing and outreach strategies via internet based platforms including web site design and development, social media, digital graphics, and e-commerce.
All work will be done remotely, no on-farm or on-site visitation

Working Business Hours
TBD based on applicant’s schedule and organizational needs

Internship Duration and Work Environment

  • All interns have an anticipated start date of October 1, 2020
  • All Internships will last approximately 16 weeks (not including holiday weeks) for 10-15 hrs a week
  • All internships will have a 100% remote working environment

1 – NC Sea Grant
Coastal Counties

The intern will focus on communications, online platform development, and marketing assistance in order to reach a larger audience and increase sales. Tasks include creating and modifying websites to improve user interface, researching and developing a platform for online sales, creating streamlined systems of communication between seafood producers and consumers, drafting educational resources for consumers on safe seafood practices. Additionally, the intern may assist in other virtual marketing efforts to effectively reach the community and increase sales (social media, etc.).

2 – Grocers on Wheels
Wake County/Triangle

The intern will focus on communications, online platform development, and marketing assistance in order to reach a larger audience and increase sales. Tasks include creating and modifying websites to improve user interface, researching and developing a platform for online sales (specifically compatible with social media), creating streamlined systems of communication between producers and consumers, drafting educational resources for consumers. Additionally, the intern may assist in other virtual marketing efforts to effectively reach the community.

The intern will focus on online platform development and marketing assistance for a variety of vendors. Tasks include creating and modifying websites to improve user interface, researching and developing platforms for online sales, helping producers establish and build an online presence, heading educational efforts to diversify producers’ technological use. Additionally, the intern may assist in other virtual marketing efforts to effectively reach the community (social media, etc).

Additionally, the intern will research and assess alternatives to face-to-face distribution models currently in place in conventional markets.

The intern will focus on communications and marketing assistance. Tasks include creating promotional material for local food hubs, developing streamlined systems of communication between food hubs/producers/consumers, researching internal produce sourcing between food hubs and presenting existing models. Additionally, the intern may assist in drafting educational resources for consumers to promote the importance of food hubs in local communities.

Work Schedule
Flexible – Monday – Friday, Hours can be scheduled directly with the mentor and the intern coordinator during their normal hours of business as written above and in coordination with student(s) schedule. Approximately 10-15 hours per week. Student must be able to commit at least 10 hours per week to the internship

-High School Diploma or Equivalent
-Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary education (community college, 4-year college or University, and graduate degree)

-Ability to take direction, show initiative, and work well in a team as well as independently
-Excellent communication and organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to be flexible – to adapt to a changing work environment responding to community needs.
-Experience with internet based marketing strategies to expand customer base and increase revenue
-Must be flexible and open to working with mentors, vendors, producers, CEFS staff, university/college faculty, Extension Agents and other organizations

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

-Skills in design and development of online digital marketing platforms is preferred
-Interest in supporting marketing strategies to highlight messaging of community food systems and promotion of local foods
