A post-doctoral research position in Neuroethology is available for research projects that will require 30% field work and 70% lab work. The post-doctoral candidate will work in both the Lynch lab at Hofstra University and the Shea lab at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. The Lynch lab has expertise in field biology, neuroethology, comparative approaches, and naturalistic behavior, and Hofstra offers a complementary departmental community and strong interactions with undergraduate researchers. The Shea lab has expertise in neural circuit control of behavior, neurotropic viruses. and optical and electrical methods for observing neural activity in behaving animals. CSHL offers a vibrant and highly collaborative neuroscience community, frequent internal and external seminars, and access to many cutting edge tools.
We seek a qualified, productive and highly motivated researcher with a background in Neuroscience and Animal Behavior and preferably experience in any of the following: Molecular Biology, Neuroendocrinology, and/or Bioinformatics. This position requires a strong interest in field work with birds, which will require travel to fairly remote locations in the U.S. that may experience extreme weather conditions. Avian field biology skills will be considered a plus but not required. The candidate should have a strong interest in working with undergraduate collaborators and providing students with authentic research experiences. The position is for two years with the possibility of extension. We celebrate multiple approaches and points of view. We are mainly using molecular, endocrine and behavioral methods as well as developing viral vectors to understand the neural, hormonal and molecular basis of brood parasitism in birds with a focus on the role of prolactin. The candidate will work on research projects regarding the relationship between prolactin and avian brood parasitic behavior. We are also interested and motivated to incorporate new techniques. The candidate will:
• Design experiments, perform research experiments, collect and maintain records of all raw data from each experiment, and analyze data using appropriate statistical tools.
• Prepare data for submitting reports to intramural and extramural funding agencies.
• Write original research articles and critical review articles to submit for publication in peer-reviewed journals
• Assist in overseeing general laboratory maintenance

PhD in Biology, Neuroscience, or related field required. A highly motivated candidate with an interest in research that blends field work with molecular neuroethology. Experience with animal behavior, particularly wild birds. Experience with any of the following: steroid and/or peptide hormone assays, in situ hybridization, brain sectioning, immunocytochemistry, stereotaxic surgery and/or bioinformatics. Interest in working with undergraduate research assistants; representative publications with undergraduate co-authors is a plus. Ability to conduct field research in remote locations either independently or with undergraduate interns. Ability to be mobile as work will be divided between field locations and laboratory locations that are split between Hofstra and Cold Spring Harbor (30min apart). Interest in bioinformatics and transcriptomics is a plus. Strong quantitative analysis, writing and public speaking skills are essential. Valid driver’s license required. Fluent in written and spoken English.
