Job Description

The position requires strong organizational, technical, and interpersonal skills, and an ability to work with scientists on a diverse range of research projects. The core facility manager will oversee the day-to-day operations in the Environmental Genetics and Genomics (EnGGen) facility, including operation and routine maintenance of all genetic sequencing instrumentation and related equipment. The manager will oversee training and supervision of core facility users, scheduling of instrumentation, and will provide basic experimental design and data analysis to users. The manager will work with the University Comptroller’s office to develop recharge rates, assist with invoicing of billed services to facility clientele, and will aid the development of a business plan for the long-term sustainability of the facility.

Essential position responsibilities

  • Ensures all users are sufficiently trained for and actively employ safe, secure and responsible operations in the facility
  • Establishes and implements guidelines for use of the laboratory, including procedures and protocols. Ensures that users are trained, aware, and adhering to the guidelines.
  • Operates and maintains genetic sequencing instruments (Illumina MiSeq, Applied Biosystems 3730) and performs quality assurance checks on the experimental data
  • Ensures all support instrumentation is in good working order (PCR thermocyclers, nanodrop, gel electrophoresis, liquid handling systems, pipettors, etc)
  • Coordinates/troubleshoots with instrument manufacturers to schedule preventative maintenance visits and repairs
  • Performs and trains others to perform fundamental molecular genomic experiments such as DNA/RNA extraction, quantification, sample cleanup, DNA library construction, fragment analysis, etc.
  • Maintains an updated schedule of rates on fee-for-service activities in the core, developed in conjunction with the NAU Comptroller’s office
  • Oversees instrument scheduling and electronic access to EnGGen space
  • Consults users on experimental setup, proper use of laboratory resources, and data analyses
  • Stays current with new developments related to the laboratory environment including technology, processes, and equipment
  • Serves as the expert on local, state, and national standards, regulations, and codes related to laboratory practice
  • Engages with other core facility managers on campus and within the Tri-University core facility partnership
  • Ensures laboratory is prepared for annual safety inspections, and coordinates response to any concerns identified in these inspections

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 1-2 years of management experience and/or 2-4 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in a related field
  • 2-4 years of management experience
  • 4+ years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


  • Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of the laboratory operation, including sample preparation, purification, and handling, data acquisition, data processing and data interpretation
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory health and safety requirements

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus and NAU-Fort Defiance as these campuses have on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
