  Nature of Work 

The goal of the lab is to understand how ligand gated ion channels transform the binding of a ligand into a conformational change that opens an ion-conducting pore. Additionally, we are interested in how ion channels are regulated during physiological and pathophysiological conditions. The successful candidate for this position will perform and support research in the area of ion channel regulation on biophysics in-line with the funded research projects in the lab. This includes fluorescence imaging of channels and accessory proteins in both heterologous sytems and neurons as well as some protein expression and purification experiments a well. Along with experimentation and data collection, data analysis, preparation of manuscripts and presentations is required as well. This position will be a combination of supporting the research of other lab members (e.g. by maintaining cell lines or preparing bacterial media or managing the lab ordering) and working on an own research project which includes performing the research, analyzing data, and preparing results for publication.

 Supervision Received

 The PRAs will be supervised by the principal investigator. Examples of Work Performed

 1) Immunohistochemistry on neurons, SA node cells, and/or CHO cells

2) Light microscopy

3) Protein expression in bacteria

4) Protein purification

5) Binding assays

6) EH&S compliance and training

  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Experience with standard wetlab procedures such as preparing solutions, lab safety, managing chemical waste, and the use of standard wetlab equipment

-B.A./B.S. in a STEM related focus area such as biology, chemistry, or similar
