The Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Project Manager position.

This position falls within the University structure at the Program Manager level.  Program Managers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of a program, function or work unit, including the development and implementation of processes consistent with college, school or departmental strategies and processes.  These positions typically do not supervise others.

Job Summary:

The Project Manager of Strategic Initiatives is a unique opportunity that will be responsible for managing various high-level projects within the Office of the Chancellor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. This role will report directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Strategic Initiatives with the primary focus of supporting various initiatives and projects developed through the campus strategic planning process. The Project Manager will champion projects of varying scope and complexity, with an emphasis on agility and maintaining a cadence that builds momentum for effective strategic planning development and implementation. This person will help to organize and prioritize critical issues and required information to facilitate efficient decision making.

In collaboration with the Associate Vice Chancellor, the Project Manager will bridge all stakeholder units, establish project tasks/dependencies/deadlines, allocate resources, identify and mitigate risks, gather requirements, hold review meetings and provide status updates. In order to execute project work successfully with the faculty, staff, students, administration, and community involved in these processes, the person within this position is required to have experience and knowledge in both waterfall and agile methodologies. The Project Manager may participate in key constituent meetings to support strategic effectiveness and help facilitate communications regarding strategic decisions. This position calls for an individual with very strong organizational, communication, relationship-building, facilitation, negotiation, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Overall, the Project Manager will engage collaboratively with the development and ongoing efforts of a team that will design, develop, and implement initiatives for the prosperity of the campus. The Project Manager will help build organizational capacity to maximize our strategic impact. The Project Manager will be accountable and help provide the necessary supports to stakeholders as they embark on the activities aligned with the strategic priorities.  

This position is located at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. Remote work will be acceptable during the pandemic and will be re-evaluated when it is safe to return to work.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Collaborates with faculty, staff, students, administrators, and the community on strategic initiatives and deliverables to ensure success
  • Supports the execution of the university’s project management infrastructure including risks & issues reporting, project timeline template creation, and communication plan development
  • Provides insights and strategies to enable teams to deliver results that meet strategic objectives and outcomes
  • Creates, drives and communicates project plans, schedules and project budgets
  • Defines and produces actionable deliverables with each project, assuring that all goals are met and deliverables are completed from stakeholders in a timely manner
  • Exemplifies effective stakeholder management and developing the correlating cadence to support stakeholders needs and expectations
  • Facilitates the redesign of existing centralized processes to enhance efficiency and quality for the stakeholders involved in existing or new strategic initiatives
  • Collaborates with operations and the various functions on strategy for executing projects focused on the campus’s strategic priorities and goals
  • Develops a consistent rhythm of follow-up with project teams, assessing and reporting on team status, escalating problems as needed and aiming towards completion
  • Creates the project documentation necessary to facilitate the work and outcomes required for every project’s scope including resource allocations
  • Understands when obstacles or challenges need to be discussed and/or escalated
  • Identifies risks and issues for reporting and works with the necessary stakeholders to develop mitigation strategies and tactics
  • Facilitates a high-performing, collaborative, and functional team by promoting transparency and adaptation
  • Intentionally measures the effectiveness and efficiency of projects to quantify the impact on the University’s mission, revenues, costs, etc.  
  • Proactively shares ideas, insights, lessons learned and best practices with colleagues
  • Participates in on-going project management training and development

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in a field of study directly related to this position, such as business, higher education, communications, psychology, learning technologies, or similar.  
  • Candidates with Bachelor’s degrees in other non-related fields may also be considered if they have applicable project management credentials such as certifications in one or more of the following:
    • PMI-CAPM (Certificate Associate in Project Management) 
    • PMI-PMP (Project Management Professional) 
    • CSM or CSPO (Certified Scrum Master or Certified Scrum Product Owner) 
  • Minimum of 4 years of project management experience as a project manager and/or project lead. 
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in (or in consultation with) higher education or academic industries.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the above-named fields of study 
  • Experience in digital education, change management, and/or strategic planning
  • Agile project management experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience utilizing data analysis tools for basic data manipulation and reporting
  • Extensive experience with project management systems
