Position Overview

This position’s purpose is to serve as the lead custodian of the residence hall to help the custodial staff maintain a standard of cleanliness in UNT’s residence halls in order to contribute to the overall appearance, cleanliness, safety and standard of excellence set by the Department of Housing and Residence Life.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of general working experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep records and complete forms accurately.
• Ability to apply mathematical concepts to complete tasks (example: measuring).
• Sufficient knowledge of proper use of equipment.
• Physical ability to perform work involving standing, stooping, operating equipment, and lifting of materials and equipment.
• Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Reports attendance & performance of Custodians to custodial supervisors.

Responsible for ordering supplies for the hall.

o

Custodial closets are kept orderly and clean.

o

Custodial machinery is repaired in hall if possible and routed out of hall quickly if it is not possible to fix in hall.

o

Office Areas – light fixtures cleaned and bulbs replaced as necessary; counter tops, phones, and other surfaces kept clean;trash receptacles relined as needed.

o

Windows-All window glass kept clean; blinds dusted; window treatments kept dust-free and hanging properly; Any missing, broken, or damaged window treatment reported.

o

Stairs, entrance, and public areas (i.e. tv rooms&living rooms)—swept, mopped, vacuumed daily during low traffic times; hand rails cleaned and polished daily.

o

Hallways – water fountains cleaned and polished; hallway and exit lights replenished as needed; hallway ceiling tiles replaced as necessary; hallway carpet vacuumed daily; vandalism reported.

o

Furniture—all furniture dusted, vacuumed, cleaned, polished as needed and replaced to designated area as needed. Cushions flipped or replaced as necessary and notified when furniture or upholstery is beyond repair and needs replacement.

o

Laundry rooms – Laundry machines, sinks, and lint boxes cleaned daily; walls kept clean and free from mildew; floors mopped and kept free from debris; trash cans emptied; broken equipment reported to supervisor.

o

Trash – Trash emptied and cans relined weekly; cans washed when needed and kept odor free; dumpsters to be cleaned daily; debris and trash around dumpster kept inside container.

o

Outside Entrances – Trash picked up and walkways swept clean as needed; ashtrays kept filled with sand; front entrances kept clear of debris; exterior trash containers to be emptied and relined as needed, pots of flowers watered as needed.

o

Other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Hall Director.

o

Hard Surface Floors cleared of dust, debris, scuff marks, spills and buffed to a high gloss as directed. Mopping, stripping and waxing and buffing floors as needed.

o

Carpets vacuumed daily and spot cleaned as spills occur. Carpets edged with a small vacuum as needed. Carpets which are beyond revitalization reported to ADMO.

o

Baseboards kept free of dust and scuff marks. Loose baseboards reported to ADMO.

o

Entrance mats swept daily and kept free of dust, mud, and grit.

o

Shower curtains kept free from mildew; walls and tiles free from soap scum, mildew and graffiti; chrome fixtures polished; drains cleared of hair and debris.

o

All toilet surfaces cleaned, shined, sanitized and free of offensive odors.

o

Floors wept, kept free of debris, mopped and waxed to a high shine.

o

Miscellaneous-Sinks and fixtures free of soap scum and water spots; paper towels, toilet paper and soap dispensers monitored for replenishing. Light fixtures cleaned and bulbs monitored for replacement.

o

Trash cans and other receptacles emptied daily and relined.

o

Assignments completed in competent manner and in timely fashion; supervisor contacted immediately for next assignment.

o

Room Floors – room floors prepared for refinishing by removing gum, paint, and dead wax; striped, “top-cared”, and waxed in the time allotted by the supervisor; equipment maintained; use of supplies maximized.

o

Carpet care – extraction machines carefully used and appearance maintained of equipment; necessary maintenance work performed to minimize clogging of sprayers and filters.

o

The employee understands the purpose of the job safety program; is a good role model of safe behavior and expects safe behavior and practices from employees.

o

Equipment used as instructed for designated tasks only; equipment stored in designated areas; maintenance reported when needed; buckets, mops, brushes, and other supplies properly cleaned and stored after use.

o

Work orders reported such as: broken hand railings, dripping faucets, needed plaster work; painting needs, etc.

o

Oral and written safety instructions followed with regards to job safety.

o

Purpose of the job safety program understood.

o

Good housekeeping and safety precautions followed.
