Position Summary:
Works under minimal supervision to perform maintenance, repair, basic operation, basic user training, and other support functions for Bicentennial Hall analytical instrument systems; assists faculty and students with instrument-related activities.

Essential Functions:
Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.

Performs maintenance and repairs, including software upgrades, on various spectrometric, and other analytical instrument systems.
Performs maintenance and repairs on other laboratory equipment, and apparatus, including sequencers, centrifuges, heating & cooling devices, and the like.
Provides a basic level of support for laboratory instruments and equipment.
Provides support for field instruments and systems, including gravimeter, seismometers, SONAR devices, underwater ROV, lake current meters, and the like.
Provides general instruction, consultation, and guidance to students on proper use of instrumentation and equipment.
Assists students and faculty on thesis and research projects, including consultation or collaboration on equipment design and fabrication.
Advises and assists faculty in the design and fabrication of custom electronic and electromechanical devices, both analog and digital.
Installs, maintains, and repairs instrument alarm and emergency backup devices, including UPSes.
Manages inventory of instruments, tools, meters, scopes, and common repair parts and components.
Assists with the operation and maintenance of equipment on the R/V Folger; may also serve as mate.
Advises and assists faculty in the specification, selection, purchase, and installation of instruments, computer interfaces, UPS systems, and related laboratory equipment.
Works with other STSS technical staff to service existing equipment, fabricate new projects, and maintain building support facilities.

General Responsibilities:
Must be able to work closely and interact well with faculty, staff, and students.

Must be a strongly cooperative team member who demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and accountability. Pursues professional development through such activities as participation in workshops and training seminars.

Provides backup support for STSS staff in other areas, as required.

Good written and oral communication skills required.


BS or BA in a physical science or engineering, or in a biological or other science with appropriate training on analytical systems. Examples of systems and operations for which knowledge would be an asset include: SEM, ICP, XRD, AA, GC, GC/MS, LC/MS, HPLC, MCD, FTIR, TGA, or UV/Vis. Additional training on laboratory instrumentation and in safe seamanship practices may be taken after hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must have a general understanding of the core scientific principles and practices applicable to the above instruments, and be able to analyze and troubleshoot problems down to the board or subsystem level. Able to analyze and troubleshoot various electromechanical and electronic systems and devices, including AC and DC power supplies and power distribution. Proficient in operation and use of computer hardware and application software, on at least one of the following operating systems: UNIX, Windows, or MAC OS; Must be able to prepare documentation, maintain databases, and manage inventories using Microsoft Office tools. Some fundamental programming ability in one or more OS is desirable. General skills in optics, vacuum systems, soldering and desoldering techniques, and basic use of machine tools is helpful. Must be detail-oriented with good organizational skills. Must be responsible, dependable, and able to work with a high degree of independence.

Minimum of 1 - 3 years’ experience in calibration, maintenance, and repair of analytical instrumentation in a laboratory setting required.

Physical Demands:
Must be able to crawl around, under, and into closefitting instrument systems and cabinets, and be able to lift, shift, and move components weighing up to 60 pounds.
