This position will directly advance the research of the Alliance for AI-Accelerated Materials Discovery, A3MD, under the supervision of Prof. Ted Sargent at the University of Toronto.

The Senior Research Associate will contribute to the development of research directions and the planning of research activities, and determining the appropriate methodologies with which to carry out identified research goals. The incumbent will work with research teams to ensure project progress; and will contribute to lab operation, including resource management and equipment procurement.

Goals will include advancing research and its translation in the area of artificial intelligence, materials informatics, robotics, and computational materials science. Specific research targets will include developing methods by which AI algorithms can be trained using data from computation and experiment, in order to accelerate the prediction of new materials for energy and consumer electronics. The SRA will also contribute to advancing the industrial R&D collaboration with A3MD corporate partners. Using scientific and engineering research expertise, the incumbent will build collaborative relationships with existing and new industry partners in R&D activities, and will organize financial resources and ensure timely and scientifically rigorous reporting to partners. The position will require overseeing intellectual property disclosures and patents, collaborations with academic and industrial groups, and the pursuit of commercialization opportunities for the technologies developed in both groups.


  • A PhD degree in an area of science (such as chemistry or physics), engineering (such as electrical engineering, materials science, computer engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering), computer science, data sciences
  • >= 5 years of research experience in at least one of materials informatics, computational materials science or computational chemistry, automated experimental laboratories, materials discovery for consumer electronics or energy, or AI
  • Experience in research laboratories including the management, usage and direct support of specific research equipment such as automated robotic laboratories; or the management, usage and direct support of high-performance computing capabilities.
  • Prior experience in industry, tech transfer, and/or applied academic research
  • Strong leadership skills and project management experience
  • The position will require versatility and interdisciplinarity in potential applicants.


  • Scientific research and development and management related to materials science, materials chemistry, materials physics, computational semiconductor studies, computational catalysis, density functional theory, molecular dynamics, algorithm development, artificial intelligence
  • As the research expert, supports the development and successful maintenance of research partnerships with major multinational corporate partners
  • Management of an annual cycle of planning and management relating to fulfilling scientific and technical research milestones and deliverables
  • Coordination of an annual process of competitive internal research granting within the alliance, including the coordination of new research projects seeking annual support from alliance membership
  • Supports the coordination of A3MD and research related events such as a monthly Distinguished Lecture Series, quarterly technical reviews with research industry partner technical leads, and twice-a-year reviews with senior leadership of research industry partners, and a two-day annual meeting among all trainees, PI and coPIs, and research industry parners
  • Assists with creating research marketing materials to promote A3MD research and its activities.
  • Development and implementation of a research-related public engagement and broad communications strategy via traditional earned media, website, social media and influencer strategies
  • Development and deployment of a global engagement strategy, establishing A3MD’s role in global research networks and joint works with related alliances and programs.
  • Supports the writing of research grant proposals to government and other agencies towards matching and additional support of A3MD’s scientific goals.
