The Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for one (1) full-time tenure stream appointment at the rank of Associate Professor in the areas of Criminology, Law & Society, with a focus on Canadian Black Studies. The appointment will begin July 1, 2021 or shortly thereafter.
Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, Law & Society or a closely related field with a primary focus on criminology, law & society and a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. The candidate must have a focus or expertise in Canadian Black Studies as evidenced in their research and teaching. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. The successful candidate must also have a proven record of activities that contribute to equity and diversity.
Successful candidates will actively take part in contributing to one of the strongest and most exciting criminology, law & society programs as part of the sociology department. To date, our Criminology, Law & Society program encompasses a broad variety of research and teaching topics, ranging from criminal justice institutions to Indigenous repatriation of settler property to lawyering to the social impacts of unjust laws and legal systems. The candidate is expected to have the opportunity to seed and grow a hub at the University of Toronto Mississauga focused on Canadian Black Studies.
The successful candidate will have established an innovative research trajectory at the highest level and an outstanding research program. The candidate must provide evidence of excellence in research which can be demonstrated by sustained high impact contributions and publications in top ranked and field relevant academic journals and internationally ranked presses, participation in professional associations through presentations at significant conferences and service work, obtaining competitive funding sources, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, and strong letters of reference.
The candidate will have a demonstrated ability to develop an excellent teaching program at the undergraduate and graduate level and to be an effective supervisor and mentor of graduate students. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments (including supervisions of MA and PhD students), strong letters of reference and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application to include a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course materials, and evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application.
The successful candidate will teach in the undergraduate program at the University of Toronto Mississauga, contributing primarily to our Criminology, Law & Society program. They will also be a member of the Graduate Department of Sociology, University of Toronto and will teach and supervise students in the tri-campus graduate program housed at the St. George campus.
