The Public Safety Officer will report to the Sergeant of Public Safety. The Public Safety Officer will detect and prevent crime and enforce all laws and University rules and regulations, preserve the peace, protect life and property within his/her span of control.
This position will monitor the safety of students, faculty and staff on the Lincoln Park campus through patrol activity on campus and within DePaul buildings, monitor visitor access to DePaul buildings, conduct foot patrols, lock down classrooms and respond to service calls and alarms and report suspicious activity. This position will also assist Chicago Police and Fire departments with special detail, as needed, for campus activities and events.

Responsibilities & Duties
- Make frequent patrols, by foot and vehicle, of designated campus areas to watch for unusual or suspicious activities and hazardous situations.
- Report situations to dispatcher and/or supervisor.
- Respond to a variety of situations and incidents; including, but not limited to: burglaries, thefts, assaults, sexual assaults, robberies, accidents, medical emergencies, fire alarms, etc.
- Take positive action on complaints/calls for assistance received from faculty, staff, students, visitors and others.
- Detain offenders taken into custody until Chicago Police Department is on scene.
- Notify Chicago Police on all incidents viewed on public or private property in the area surrounding campus. May be required to testify in court.
- Respond to a variety of complaints/calls received from residents who live in the immediate campus area.
- Control access to unauthorized areas.
- Question suspicious persons as to their purpose for being in a specific location.
- Screen outsiders or visitors to campus and campus buildings.
- Check, lock and open University buildings and classrooms for regular classes as well as room rentals in the academic buildings.
- Check office areas for suspicious activities.
- Open offices, upon request by occupant, and secure offices when found open and unattended.
- Write incident reports when action is taken by a Public Safety Officer.
- Notify Chicago Police on all major incidents/crimes.
- Notify supervisors of all serious incidents.
- Write Accident/Illness reports and determine transport needs of the patient for treatment.
- Provide transport, as needed, via University vehicle to local medical facility for non-serious/non-life threatening conditions.
- Notify the Chicago Fire Dept. for assistance if condition is serious or life-threatening.
- Assist the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Fire Department on all incidents on campus.
- Provide excellent customer service to faculty, staff, students, guests, visitors and neighborhood residents in responding to inquiries and incidents.
- Work with Residents Directors and Resident Advisors to educate students regarding behavioral and safety issues within the housing units.
- Provide a variety of services to outside groups who rent space at various times throughout the year, i.e. Golden Apple, Fred's Camp, various conference groups, etc.
- Handle a variety of issues related to events on campus; including: athletic events, Fest, Take Back the Night, Sheffield Garden Walk, various concerts, Move in weekends, etc.
- Provide hospital transports for sick and injured individuals or as requested by University Counseling Services.
- Provide a daily e_scort service between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. for the safety of faculty, staff, students and guests on campus.
- Test BRG emergency notification system weekly.
- Perform bi-monthly tests of campus emergency call boxes, and duress alarms.
- Monitor Chicago Emergency Radio (Zone 4) for information of incidents happening around campus area.
- Perform Dispatch function for the campus, on a rotating basis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum experience of 1 year in public safety or law enforcement, or related service-oriented industry.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Possess visual acuity.
- Good physical condition without any restriction in the ability to walk, run, stand or climb multiple flights of stairs.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to sit for an extended amount of time (intervals in excess of 60 minutes).
- Ability to perform extended foot patrols multiple times during a shift (intervals in excess of 30 minutes).
- Ability to give pursuit of offender on foot.
- Ability to drive a vehicle for extended amounts of time without interruption (intervals up to 3-4 hours).
- Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
- Ability to react and work calmly under pressure.
- 24/7 Operation, operating 3 daily shifts.
- Some college coursework/credit.
